Is it Right to Exclude Males or Females from Certain Professions because of their Gender? IELTS Writing Task 2 has three sample answers provided below. Topic: Woman and men are commonly seen as having different strength and weaknesses. Is it right to exclude males or females from certain professions because of their gender? Give reason for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

In our traditional society, several particular professions have been explicitly or implicitly given to men and women in different ways. The tasks requiring more physical prowess and power were given to the men, while the caring, food preparation, cleaning, and other housekeeping tasks were given to the women. They made this choice entirely based on what they noticed about gender traits. They were prompted to make those decisions by observations such as the biological strength of the males and the more intricate interior body structures of the females, which included the womb, which needed to be safeguarded from any outside danger. According to people who make decisions, men do the majority of the outside labour while women do the majority of the interior job.

But is this kind of idea or stereotypical thinking still valid today? Indeed, as civilization matured, new occupations began to emerge. Both sexes began to choose careers that more closely matched their interests, despite the traditional "gender line" between them. For instance, many males desired to work in the field of cooking, whereas many women wanted to work in the field of defence. However, because of the assumptions set by society, they began to feel ashamed or quit their jobs. This has a significant negative effect on their own mental well-being and undermines the potential of that profession, which, if carried out by an atypical gender, can result in a distinct working style or direction. Yes, it is true that a certain gender is more appreciated in certain professions because of gender characteristics, but this appreciation should not be a demotivating or discriminating thing for the other gender. 

I think it is not right to exclude males and females from any profession, only because of their gender, unless and until their gender characteristics play a limiting role in the efficiency of that job, which is quite rare in today's scenario. There are many great examples of men being more prosperous in jobs dominated by women and women being more prosperous in jobs dominated by men. Examples like Marie Curie (who got awarded Nobel prize in both physics and chemistry), Sanjeev Kapoor ( the most successful chef in India ), Kiran Bedi ( 1st woman IPS officer ) , Manish Malhotra ( the most successful fashion designer in India ) has shown us the impact that gender equality puts in the scope and approach of a particular job. Both the genders, when collaborating in a particular work, put their own ideas and intelligence to the work which induces a better result. This has been seen in office work environments nowadays.

However, if gender differences play a limiting role in the efficiency of a certain job, I think it is right to exclude them for the sake of the result. For example, in the army, if the biological abilities of a woman affect the result of a very stressful or energy-draining mission, it is right to exclude them from that profession. Also, in the profession of a nanny, a man can be excluded as females are seen to possess a more caring nature than males.

Band 6 IELTS Essay 

Due to various unique characteristics that each gender has received from nature, there are some vocations where men and women do slightly better than one another. Due to this, it is believed that certain restrictions are placed on a particular gender in a given employment. Anyone should not, in my opinion, be subjected to discrimination based on their gender in any career if the discrimination is done just to appease stereotypical thinking. For instance, it is wrong to treat someone differently only because society deems them unfit for a job as a male beautician or a female member of the armed forces. But if gender characteristics really have any impact on the efficiency of the job, I think it is right to exclude a particular gender from a particular job, but the margin should be as thin as possible.

However, gender equality in the workplace has turned out to be more successful than same-sex workplaces because of how quickly the globe is developing. This is due to the fact that both genders contribute to the task with their own thoughts and perspectives, making the end outcome more laudable and acceptable to both genders. For instance, a male police officer would deal more easily with the male victim if there was a false claim in a molestation case, whereas female police officers would deal more easily with the female victims of domestic abuse or a case of molestation.

So both genders in a particular job make the service or the product more acceptable or comfortable for both the genders. Stereotypical notions like a woman should always do the cooking and cleaning stuff and a man should do only the hard stuff is irrelevant in the present times. There are many examples of women IPS and IAS Officers excelling in their jobs and there are also many male chefs , cooks , beauticians or fashion designers getting extraordinary success in their respective fields.

Band 8 IELTS Essay 

Despite some physical differences, no one can tell a difference between a man and a woman's cerebral or emotional capabilities. It is wrong to exclude one gender from a position just because they don't seem qualified or might not be able to perform it. No matter their gender, everyone should be given a fair chance to attempt any job that interests them. In particular, society need to encourage men to work in jobs that are more feminine and women to work in jobs that are more masculine. They shouldn't be subjected to prejudice just because of how they look to be stereotypical. The need of creating suitable work environments for both genders has increased as the globe becomes more advanced.

As both the genders, when working under the same organization or a company, it is observed that the efficiency of the employees grows because of their collaboration. Both the genders use their own special abilities and ideas to the work , which makes it more profitable than the work of any same-sex-oriented organization. As more and more professions are evolving nowadays, the interests and hobbies of both males and females are also changing . Many men are seen to do women-dominated jobs like beautician, fashion designing, cook while many women are seen to do men-dominated jobs like defense. Society should encourage them in order to ensure social and gender equality. None should be barred from pursuing their hobbies or using their full potential only because of some notions that our forefathers made, which doesn't have any relevance in today's world.

However, a thin margin of discrimination may have to be imposed in the jobs where the physical abilities of males and females puts an impact on the result of the job. For example, for a heavy task mission in the army, generally, men are preferred because of their biological strengths, and for the profession of a nurse, a woman can be preferred because of their potential in caring and looking after the patient.
