It is a widely recognized fact that sports events like the Olympics play an important role in maintaining harmony, peace, and a sense of nationalism, but it is also a known fact that there have been many fights and disagreements among the supporters and fans in the past.

Events like the Olympic Games or the World Football Cup have been a major tool in developing peace amongst the masses as well as a way to show patriotism. Over the last several decades, sports matches and teams have been worshipped and celebrated like soldiers returning from war. These international events enable people to understand other cultures and norms of the rival country. Before the matches begin, or sometimes after the match ends, the players shake hands or congratulate the winning team. This sends a great message that they hold no negative feelings towards the rival players outside the game. These acts can also help reduce international pressures.

It is in human nature to have emotions about our country and traditions, and each time a team from our country enters the field, they represent all of us as a nation. This brings friends and families together and even forms new relationships. These international games open an enormous amount of boons for rival countries. Many prominent leaders and ministers might attend these games, hence, this could provide a middle ground where maybe they can talk over their differences through their similar interest in sports.

There are many ways in which international sports games help ease tensions, but at the same time, they can also have the opposite effect.

Although these games can be a healthy outlet for emotions to be released, sometimes people get carried away with them. In many cases on the field, a rival might be overcome with rage and the result of not being able to control his emotions may lead to them being disqualified, which may be fatal to the whole team. This might even trigger fights between the supporters over each team, which can lead to some serious physical fights. And as a result, might lead to heightened tensions among countries instead of resolving the issues.

Sometimes, the supporters might even turn on their country’s team as well, blaming the players for not being good enough or not doing their best, leading to the players dealing with an enormous amount of hate and rude comments which can affect their mental state and can reflect upon their physical performance. The athlete may feel demotivated or depressed. The riots that sometimes emerge over these games can lead to unbiased people getting caught and hurt in between.

Although these international games are good for several countries, not all countries get a chance to participate. This might mean that their issues might not get resolved in a similar manner. People also hold a grudge over some of the events and might be very biased against a county and they would base everything about that rival country in a negative manner. This might lead to supporters targeting cultures and personal lives of the rival supporters, which might impact international tensions even more negatively.
