Topic: Some people think that the increasing use of computers and mobile phones has had a negative effect on young people’s reading and writing skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this?

Band 7 IELTS Essay

There is no doubt that technology has spread throughout society, and some argue that increased communication via technology such as computers, cell phones, and so on has had a negative impact on young people's reading and writing abilities. However, I disagree with this view in some ways, which I will describe in the following lines.

Mobile applications and desktop software that provide language assistance were created to make users' lives simpler, but regrettably play a significant part in deteriorating their language abilities. It is common for teenagers to have installed software such as Grammarly and MS-Word on their devices, which assist them in writing correctly by employing auto correction features, therefore rendering them blind to proper and erroneous phrases. Apart from that, communicating through social chatting applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and so on makes people accustomed to using slang words and abbreviations, which further complicates class presentations, colleague group discussions, and formal meetings because it becomes difficult for them not to use informal terms.

As a result, it impairs the reading and writing abilities of young office employees. Communicating with the aid of technology is advantageous since the software employed by such devices provides clues of possible language when writing, which not only improves writing abilities but also raises users' cognitive skills. Furthermore, the convenience of availability for conversing at any time due to owning mobile phones will improve persons' reading and writing abilities. For example, if an employee is sending an email to a superior using a laptop, it would be simple to create decent, error-free writing. As a result, exchanging ideas via technological devices improves such abilities.

To summarise, while speaking using electronic devices has certain drawbacks, it appears to be more favourable in terms of supplying lists of vocabulary lists, enhancing cognitive abilities, and facilitating access to devices aids in refining individuals' language skills.

Band 6 IELTS Essay

With trends and adaptations in technological aspects, there have been several changes in society. In the modern era, youngsters and even the older ones prefer to use or perform tasks with the help of computers or smartphones. Thus, some people argue that this adverse use of technology might have an adverse impact over the language skills of individuals. According to me, these devices have a huge impact on the reading as well as the writing skills of individuals. These can be a major disadvantage or might turn out to be advantageous for them.

Moreover, I agree with the fact that excessive reliance over these technological advancements might lead to several challenges in the long-run. There are instances where one can find that use of these devices have become addictive for these individuals. Due to the small keyboards that mobile phones come equipped with, individuals these days use acronyms in order to type or send a message.

They even lack knowledge of the proper spelling of words that are often used. Additionally, because spell-checkers are now a standard feature in programmes like Microsoft Word, kids are less likely to care about their spelling errors, which prevents them from cultivating good writing habits.

Furthermore, in order to completely develop skills, reading calls for more focus and consistent practice. But among young people, who want quick, easy access to videos and movies, it is seen as a tedious and uninteresting activity. The book is pushed farther down the list of preferences for the Young audience as a result of this type of behaviour.

On the other hand, despite the drawbacks of modern technology, it also has advantages, such as how an e-reader encourages children to read regularly. In addition to this, using digital resources can help people develop their writing abilities. There are numerous websites that can help people read and write. For example, dictionaries are well-known for helping people learn new terms through online resources.

In conclusion, both elements have certain advantages and disadvantages, but I believe that technology tools significantly aid the next generation in honing their language skills.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

It is common knowledge that society is transitioning to a more digital way of living. Smartphones and desktop computers are becoming an essential component of daily life, especially for young people. But it is anticipated that the global wave of digitization would have some negative consequences on the cognitive abilities of the youthful generation. In the lines that follow, I'll go into further detail about why I think this rumour is accurate and provide some supporting evidence.

First, it's critical to comprehend why internet-enabled devices are now used so frequently. Since the creation of social media platforms and programmes, one may now socialise from the convenience of their own home. Young people now spend a significant portion of their day online as a result of this degree of simplicity combined with the affordability of internet connections, which is also becoming a common amenity. There would be less time available for offline pursuits like reading books, as a result.

Second, because of the abundance of amusing content available online, particularly on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, young people are more likely to choose such straightforward kinds of entertainment. As a result, practices that were common among earlier generations—like reading or keeping a journal—have come under threat. Therefore, among this group of people, proficiency in related tasks has also decreased.

However, the usefulness of using smart devices has also resulted in additional opportunities for people to support their reading and writing skills with a wide range of materials, courses, and assistance. However, youngsters always opt to spend their time on more alluring forms of entertainment rather than hobbies that enhance intellect.

In conclusion, the rise in digital device usage has had both advantages and disadvantages. My conclusion is that this upward-trending tendency has resulted in a reduction in young people' aptitude.
