Topic: In many countries, women no longer feel the need to get married. Some people believe that this is because women are able to earn their own income and therefore do not require the financial security that marriage can bring. To what extent do you agree?

Model Answer 1

In many countries women no longer feel the need to get married. For example, women in Japan do not necessarily want to get married. The percentage of working women in Japan is higher thus; they reject the cultural norms and avoid or delay getting married. Women here focus all their attention on their work and do not rely on men for financial support. However in countries like India this antiquated concept of marriage is still prevalent. People are of the opinion that women in India at a certain age must get married or will not be respected by the society. Due to India's rich tradition and heritage, getting married in India is fundamental and momentous for family and friends. Some women get married in their early 20's or just before they touch the 30's mark. After marriage, they are bogged down by responsibilities of taking care of their husband and in-laws. They do not get time to follow their hobbies. Responsibilities for women increase after marriage and women choose to abandon their careers and work on their personal lives. There are women that can juggle both professional and personal life but there are still adjustments that women need to make taking into account their family. There are families that expect their daughter in law or husband and their wives to not work. It again leads women to settle for a life that they clearly do not desire. Women also prefer to remain single as men today lack prospects, lack unemployment and are not really the marrying kind. Some women also prefer to marry men that are more educated and financially stronger than them. As women achieve success this pool of highly educated men dwindles. The increasing percentage of failed marriages is another reason why women delay or forgo marriage. The population is at the brunt due to the increasing rate of women not getting married. I still believe that women must be given the right and freedom to decide whether they want to or not get married at all.

Model Answer 2

Every individual looks for financial security in their lives. Having a good career and financial independence is something that every man and woman craves. Some believe that women can up stake their financial wellbeing by getting married, while others completely dismiss this thought. They believe marriage is a notion that somehow creates hindrance in the career plan of women. Thus, women in many countries no longer feel the need to get married. I completely concur with this and support that women should not be obliged to get married. But financial independence is not the only thing that is leading to more and more women to forgo marriage. In a country like India that is a bounty of traditional faiths, beliefs and customs, marriage is a concept that can never get old. Marriage in India is a somewhat complex concept. Why? Being a country with diverse cultures India has different varieties of marriages depending on the religion, caste and community. Hindu marriage, Christian marriage, Sikh marriage and Muslim marriages are all examples of this. Leaving aside the varied culture, marriage for women in India is more of them leaving behind their goals and stepping into the realm of responsibilities. Even though this practice is slowly dwindling, people living in rural areas still pressurize their daughters to get married. Men on the other hand move to other locations to get married or decide not to get married at all. It causes a variation of the ratio of men and women who want to get married. This also affects the birth rate and people relying on migrant workers for jobs. In conclusion, at some point in life everybody craves companionship. But if women have to fulfill their traditional roles and compromise with their careers due to this, it is nowhere justified.

Model Answer 3

It has time and again been argued whether women should get married or not. Some believe due to traditional beliefs that it is their duty after a certain age to get married. Some culminate in their parents’ pressure, societal pressure or the need to enhance their living standards. Today many countries believe that women should be able to live their lives in their own way. Women no longer feel the need to get married or rely on men for financial independence. Take for example countries like Japan, or Bhutan, women here have the liberty to get married or not participate in this concept at all. Besides, the United States and other countries too also promote women to either stay single or delay marriage. This is bcause they are financially secure and no longer see marriage as a means of financial security. I concur with this thought as women today are earning well and can make decisions for themselves. Earlier, parents would want their daughter to get married at an early age. Today, parents are flexible enough to let their daughters decide. Women who are financially independent and living their lives happily, decide themselves when they would want to get married. It is not true for all women. Some women want to get married and live a happily married life. Getting married today for women is led by several factors. Leaving financial stability aside, women genuinely want to lead a happy married life, raise children, and so on. While there are other women that are frightened by the divorce rate today. This being said they are reluctant to get married. Not all relationships last long and it becomes quite difficult for women sometimes to pick up the pieces and kick-start their lives again. Financial security is not the only reason for women to relinquish marriage. Even though it is one the primary reasons, there are other factors involved too.
