In Many Countries Not Enough Students are Choosing to Study Science as a Subject IELTS Writing Task 2

Out of the several reasons for students not choosing science as their subject, the first reason is the difficulty level and time this subject requires. Science as a subject is very technical and practical, this is more difficult and needs more time as compared to the other subjects such as languages, literature, history, etc. Let me explain to you with an example. I am from a science background, did you know a medicine which we consume, needs at least 10 to 15 years of intense laboratory and human research before it is launched into the market. The intensive procedure comprises of a molecule formation, followed by animal testing, then filing an application for human trials, which may or may not get approved, then 10 to 11 years of human trials, and if the drug then has very minimal or no side effects, it is launched into the market. Even then the drug may fail in the huge population and would result in huge financial loss for the company. Thus, very few scientists and companies are willing to sacrifice so much of time and money into a new experiment. This is one of the major causes why people even drop out of the science field because the resilience, patience, hard work, and sleepless nights that science requires are countless.

A second most important reason is lesser opportunities for plain graduates, every scientific company requires at least a postgraduate or a doctorate individual to even carry out the most minimalistic tasks in their offices. Thus, the lack of opportunities at a young age is another factor that makes science repellent to the aspirants. However, the lack of scientific minds in the field of medicine, pharmaceuticals, etc would greatly affect the development of these fields accompanied by the stagnant growth of the country.

Science can be a boon or a bane for an individual's career. The lack of interest amongst individuals is due to several factors. To begin with, the subject is arduous to understand and learn. Thus science is tough to understand, learn, and retain and needs a lot of continuous effort along with dedication, resilience, and sincerity to succeed in life. Scoring well in science in school, colleges, and universities requires a lot of hard work and intensive research. For example, physics is a complicated practical subject and needs intensive hard work to score well. The assignments need intensive research, evaluation, understanding the concepts, time-consuming, and hectic. Hence, today's students find pursuing science a hectic topic and a burden.

Such efforts and hard work may become troublesome and outrageous for the present humanity. Professions such as doctors, scientists, researchers need people with science backgrounds, and in the present scenario of shortage of science aspirants, society would face a lack of development due to the lack of science aspirants. Thus due to the shortage of such aspirants, the country would face impediments in the mentioned domains. There would be a lack of scientists developing new medicines, vaccines, and dosage forms. This would be accompanied by a lack of innovation and would prove harmful to society. For example, if there would be no scientists there would be a delay in the synthesis of the vaccine.

Thus to conclude, science is vital for the development of society, but there has been a decline in the number of aspirants due to the difficulty of the subject, accompanied by a lack of innovations in the country thus resulting in a stagnant society and may fail in the future.

There are a variety of obstacles and issues that discourage students from pursuing science courses. The main obstacle is the high difficulty and complexity of the science courses. By enrolling in the science programs, students are expected to demonstrate and possess great levels of critical and analytical thinking to fully comprehend the abstract concepts and theories of the subject, resulting in a lot of students finding it hard to follow and thus struggle to pass their exams and tests.

Another obstacle, from a technological point of view, is that old-fashioned technology equipment in the laboratory is unlikely to accommodate the scope of modern science courses, for example, magnifying glasses have been replaced by microscopes to examine small samples. This disadvantage eventually causes a big hurdle for course instructors to implant knowledge and for students to have favorable learning experiences since many institutes lack the recent instruments or the faculty members are aware of the latest technologies.

As a result, a decreasing number of science students have many adverse effects on society. Due to the shortage of science students attending post-secondary courses, the number of technology innovations released on an annual basis may face a drop and decline as well. This unfortunate event will leave the problems that have yet to be solved as unsolved problems, thus affecting the lives of people and the development of the nation. For example, without the supply of technological solutions to automate the process of harvesting crops, agricultural productivity is at the risk of being on the decline, since manpower is slower than automated machine power. Likewise, in the business dealing with an environment where tasks need to be quickly conducted, the deficiency of highly productive software applications and laptops will cause the work to experience unexpected delays.In conclusion, the fact that students pursue programs other than Science could be owing to numerous reasons, and this trend could potentially hurt business and the economy of a country.
