Topic: Some people believe that it is more important to teach children the literature of their own country than other countries. Do you agree or disagree?

Model Answer 1

Many believe that giving primacy to indigenous literature is beneficial for school children over foreign literature. I agree entirely because this approach is practical and essential in the age of globalization.
Firstly, the literature of a particular region is a mirror of that society. In order to be efficient social beings' children must understand and assess the kind of society they live in. For example, in the collection of short stories named Malgudi Days. We learn about South Indian society and some particularities only available in South India. Indian children can learn about their community by reading such literature and not some other stories. The plot of which is set in an unfamiliar, distant land. Therefore, indigenous literature helps in the efficient socialization of a child's mind.
Secondly, westernization and, more importantly, "Americanization" has shaped our 21st-century lives. In other words, after the vacuum left by the end of the second world war. The American hegemony has shaped our ideals, tastes, choices, and beliefs in the most American way. For example, clothes, music, films which are coming from the west are regarded as part of the high culture. In this scenario, it is imperative that people clutch onto their culture represented by their indigenous literature to counter the American onslaught. So, in the age of globalization, it becomes all the more important that school kids are exposed to indigenous literature to the highest possible extent.
In conclusion, the native literature of a particular country truly reflects the power dynamics, culture. And belief systems of a specific society from which they have emerged. Children being exposed to it will develop their ability to understand their surroundings in a better way. The other reason why local literature should be prioritized over foreign literature is to stop the progress of a homogenous world defined by western culture. I think the world should be plural when it comes to literature for school kids. Otherwise, every other literature book would impart only American values and the American way of life.

Model Answer 2

Some people are of the opinion that school pupils should have a curriculum which has local literature in the form of fiction and poetry. I acknowledge the importance of aboriginal literature, but at the same time, we should not completely disregard the life lessons taught by foreign literature.
On the one hand, indigenous literature is of utmost importance for children from a nation-building perspective. Modern, powerful nation-states are not only built on an advanced army and a productive economy. It is built on the commonness that binds people and literature by showing that the commonness in our citizenship binds us in the form of a nation. For example, in India, the fiction written during the Nationalist movement. Had shown the similarity in the suffering and zeal of the Indian people under colonial rule. Thus, children being exposed to such common experiences only creates the bond between them coming from different regions yet overlapping familiar experiences.
On the other hand, some stories and poetry are universal and timeless in the messages they propagate. In other words, their messages are valuable for children and future adults from all countries irrespective of their citizenship and nationality. One of the examples of such a piece of literature is the anti-war poem, "After Blenheim," by Robert Southey. In which he shows that war is cruel, inhuman, and has only selfish interests behind them. Therefore, future voters of a democratic country must understand the ugliness of war and other such timeless truths irrespective of geography.
In conclusion, it should be kept in our understanding that indigenous literature is essential. For creating a bond among people of a particular country by highlighting the familiarity between them. However, it is also important that schools teach literature with values even when they cross borders and burn the time of sand. Therefore, while designing curriculum for school children. Educationists should be attempting to expose the students to both national and international literature, as they have their merit and complement each other.

Model Answer 3

Parents and teachers say that native stories and poetry are more important than those belonging to other countries when it comes to children's literature. I am afraid I disagree entirely with such a view since it is impractical and disregards current world dynamics and politics.
Firstly, children's literature comes in various qualities and depicts the stories of people of some communities. In a world defined by multiculturalism and pluralism, literature opens a way into the hearts and minds of other people. Who are unknown to us because they belong to distant lands. For example, many Afghan refugees have been forced to live in other parts of the world because of the Afghan refugee crisis. If the local people genuinely want to understand them, then they must not only help them in a materialistic way but also try to connect with them. Literature can play that bridge between two distant communities. And so children must read literature from foreign lands to connect and obliterate differences with people from those lands.
Secondly, history has shown us that civilisations have immensely benefited from the exchange of cultural ideas. Literature is the boat of such cultural ideas, and the benefits of globalization can only be deepened. When people embrace the idea of exchange of literature and thus culture. In contemporary times, international poetry open mics are the most prominent. Examples of such exchange of literature and the immense pleasure that human beings derive from them. Therefore, children from a very early age should be exposed to other types of foreign cultures from a very early age.
In conclusion, given the current scenario of world politics. And the multicultural turn it has taken, it is practical to be more acquainted with the history and the way of life of foreigners. This can be achieved with more exposure to foreign literature starting from a young age. Similarly, knowing about other people from faraway lands is one of the most utilitarian ways of life out there. Besides, this can be achieved through the reading of foreign literature. And thus school kids should be given more access to foreign literature keeping in mind the practicality and the goodness of it.
