IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample answer - Number Of Male And Female Students Studying Six Computer Science Subjects

Band 6.5 Answer

The bar chart given above displays the gender distribution of students pursuing computer science research at a US university in 2011 across a range of disciplines. Out of all the given disciplines, males are outnumbering the number of females in five. The male students made up a particularly large proportion of the student group in subjects related to the study of programming objects: mathematics, programming, and engineering. Another revelation from the given information is there was a huge gender gap in the field of Mathematics where there were at least five times male students than female students.

While there was gender equality represented in subjects related to the study of computer science like natural sciences, psychology, and linguistics. Comparing the gender ratio in the subject of natural science, there approximately 200 women and approximately 240 men. A similar case was for psychology. However, Linguistics was the only discipline in which women outnumbered men where there were roughly 110 women as compared to 90 men. Thus, all in all, the chart indicates that at this university, computer science subjects continue to be male-dominated with exceptions in linguistic and psychology.

Band 7 Answer

The given bar graoh provides clear depiction regarding he number of research students who got enrolled in six different computer science subjects including linguistics, psychology, natural sciences, engineering, programming and mathematics. The distriution of the students for these subjects have been shown in the graph based on the number of male and female research students for each of these subjects in the US University in 2011. On an apparent basis, it is clear from the graph that overall, the number of female students for computer science subjects is less than that of male students. Considering there are six subjects, natural sciences is where bot male and female research students have been found to be equally present in the university.

The most excessive difference can be seen in the suject of mathematics where male students were 200 which is almost four times the number of female students in the batch. In case of psychology, it can be seen that there are around 200 male studnets and about 170 female students for the subject. Both engineering and programming had 150 male students in 2011 in the US university. While there were were only around 90 students who were female in engineering, there were around only 75 students in programming. On the contrary only for natural sciences, both male and female students are 200 and for linguistics, the number of female studnets are around 110 and male students are around 80.

However, natural sciences is the only subject which has both equal number of female and male students at number of 200. In case of engineering, the number of female students are 90 and for programming they were 75, male students surpoassed them being 150 number of students in both these subjects.
