Topic: What according to you are the causes of Schadenfreude? Elaborate.

Sample Answer:

There are several reasons that lead to the feeling of schadenfreude in an individual. It has been described as a feeling in psychology as ‘delighting at the misfortune of others.’Inhumanity is a common emotion in every human being just like the presence of happiness and sadness. However, viciousness is categorized by society as a negative and sinful emotion. During our childhood, we were taught to be grateful, portray compassion and sympathy towards others associated with us. There are few qualities that promote the feeling of heartlessness within an individual. The first and foremost quality that promotes ferocity within an individual is envy. There is a vast relationship between envy and schadenfreude. This quality is built up within individuals despite their gender. Thus, gender is not a predictor but perhaps an amplifier of callousness as an individual can relate themselves to people of the same gender. This feeling is judged by morals, instincts and emotion. Moreover, it is also dependent upon a complex array of variables such as education, family, surrounding and interest. All these factors govern an individual’s nature of harshness. Thus, an individual might suffer sympathy and sadism at the sametime. Another individual’s misfortune is perceived to be undeserved from one’s point of view, thus this escalates a feeling of sympathy within the individual. This feeling is also accelerated due to the competitive nature of individuals. These individuals willingly or unwillingly, consciously or unconsciously repeatedly compete with one another. This leads to a feeling of depravity within an individual. There is always a necessity for individuals to win in every given situation. Thus, it seems as if everyone in our lives and around us are our enemies and we envy them.Additionally, due to self-interest, sympathy is mixed with savageness. This makes individuals feel less sympathetic towards people that are more successful in their lives due to the natural instincts associated with jealousy.
