IELTS Writing Task Topic

Topic: Some people think it is more important for the government to spend public money on promoting a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent illness than to spend it on the treatment of people who are already ill. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer:

It is true that the government is responsible for the welfare of the country as much as its people. The government does not have the luxury to squander money that is collected from people as taxes. It has to make the right judgement and most importantly in favour of its people. When it comes to money and time, the government has to disburse it for the good of not only healthy ones but the sickly ones too.

To promote a healthy lifestyle, the government should make plans that centre around the overall growth of all the sections of society. It is being said that prevention is better than cure. This means that the government should promote healthy living to prevent illness. But what about those who are suffering from some serious illness? In my opinion, money spent on those who have an illness is not wasting money. Rather, it should be seen as a responsibility. There is medical insurance that is provided by the government. If it is viewed as the government misspending the money, then chances are that many people will not be able to afford good treatment from good hospitals thereby increasing the mortality rate. Healthcare facilities form an essential component of a developed nation. If a country fails to provide the same, then chances are that people will migrate to different countries and the country will lose its human resource.

The countries should ensure that the section of the population that is suffering is taken care of. This doesn’t mean that they should spend lavishly on their healthcare facilities but a good system will just upscale the growth of the country on a global map. Equal emphasis should be given to both promoting a healthy lifestyle as well as to caring for those who are ill but spending it more on the section of people who are suffering from ill-health should be done in my opinion.

IELTS Cue Card

Topic: Describe a surprise party that you received.

Sample Answer:

My birthday falls on the 17th of August. I do not celebrate it but this year I received a surprise party from my family and friends. I always thought spending money excessively on parties in the name of celebration was just squandering money. In my opinion, the same money can be used for some good cause rather than hosting a lavish party. My opinions have started to change a little now when I see the effort put forth by my loved ones. It was my fiance, James’ idea to throw a birthday party for me. He convinced my father and involved him in the plan too. On my birthday evening, everyone pretended as if there was no celebration like every other birthday I spent. During the evening, as I stepped into my house after getting free from work, my family along with friends screamed “SURPRISE” at the top of their lungs. The house was decorated elegantly in the shades of black and red. Balloons, lights, candles, everything complemented the birthday mood. I was not expecting this at all but it felt so special. James almost threw away more than half his monthly salary to make all the arrangements. He is not from a rich family and can’t even afford to dissipate money as if it means nothing but when I saw him putting so much effort only for me, I had tears in my eyes. He even bought a cake from my favourite bakery. I felt overwhelmed looking at the effort everyone put in that day and I am eternally grateful for the love and affection everyone has showered on me.
