Platitude

Meaning: A remark or comment that has been used so many times that it has become uninteresting
Synonyms: cliche, truism, banality, buzzword, stereotype

Sentence 1: He had nothing to offer other than platitudes in his presentation which is why he lost the deal.
Sentence 2: The way he dresses up is no more than a platitude.
Sentence 3: He is the finest example of platitudes.
Sentence 4: He had nothing new to offer other than redundant platitudes.

Topic: Students who opt for the Science stream have a bright future in comparison to Art. To what extent do you agree?

Sample Answer:

In current times, most of the students follow a career path that pays well. In my opinion, the Science stream helps students bag a well-paid job but that is not to say that artists earn any less. It would be a platitude to say that the Science stream guarantees a good future. Students who opt for a science stream indeed have a lot more opportunities than art students. But that doesn’t determine the success of the person. Understanding success by just the amount of money a person earns is a stereotype. The meaning of success is more than that. It includes the overall wellness of the person, the satisfaction level one has in the job and how much a person is growing in it. A few years back, in the country, engineering became a buzzword and everyone opted for the course hoping to have a good earning. However, so many engineers are still unemployed and those who are employed are struggling to make the ends meet. On the contrary, many have opted for the arts and commerce stream and are flourishing in life. It has more to do with the interest of the person than just the course. In my opinion, no course or stream guarantees success or a bright future and one must not believe in such stereotypes. Instead, one should work hard in their chosen field of education and pursue the course without being blinded by the truism that spreads around them.

Topic: Describe an event in history that you find interesting.

Sample Answer:

Some events in history are not even known while others play a significant role in changing the course of history. The famous events might have become stereotypical as we all have read so much about them in our history books but if they wouldn’t have occurred, the world would have been completely different from what it is now. One such event that I find interesting is the revolt of 1857 that occurred in India. It was the first organised rebellion against the Britishers. It has become a buzzword that the British colonised us for 200 years but what is most important about the event was that it challenged the general platitude that the British were superior and undefeatable. What began with a group of sepoys quickly escalated into a mass effort. The major reason was the Doctrine of Lapse according to the annexation policy. A large number of Indian rulers were dislodged and due to insecurity, many rulers joined hands to fight the British. This event was significant even though the Indians lost the war as many states did not join it. A deeper study that is not impacted by the truism would reveal that the southern province did not join the force thus leading to the failure of the revolt. However, the impact was heard from a distance and it formed the foundation for the next attempt at freedom. It sowed the seed of nationalism thus allowing the country freedom from colonialism.
