IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic

Topic: Some people argue that capital punishment is a brutal decision and should be abolished. Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer:

Capital punishment refers to the state-sanctioned killing of criminals. But no matter how brutal it may sound, in some cases, the crime committed by some people is abhorrent that there is no way to carry out justice other than killing a life. Criminals sometimes carry out such horrifying acts that it questions their thought process and perplexes us to ponder at the insanity latent in some human brain. It almost becomes impossible to believe that the same human brain that thinks of innovations and makes this world a better place to live through good deeds can commit such disgusting acts as rape, murder, human trafficking and so on. Those who become victims of this heinousness fail to return to their normal life and remain traumatised as long as they live. Thanks to psychotherapy, some victims can come out of their trauma and restart their life with optimism and positivity but in most cases, the victims fail to trust in humanity especially when the offender is not given as brutal punishment equivalent to the pain they have undergone. In my opinion, countries should not be forgiving towards criminals who have degraded themselves to the level of a monster and have become repugnant inside out. Punishments that are strict and brutal would certainly reduce the crime rate in the country thereby improving the safety of people. Abolishing capital punishment would suggest that criminals are unapproachable for their loathful acts which would not send a good message in society. Therefore, strict punishments should be promoted by countries to ensure justice and spread some hope in society.

Topic: Describe a movie that you recently watched which left a lasting impression on your mind.

Sample Answer:

Recently I watched a movie that made me feel so repugnant about ever exploring the psycho-horror-thriller genre. It was a British movie named The Snare which was directed by C.A Cooper. At first, it looked like a bunch of friends who would go on a trip and encounter some serious mishap. However, I was prepared to witness that horror but to my surprise, it had rather fun elements. Little did I know the disgust that would have taken over me after the first half passed. The plot was that the group of friends got trapped in an apartment which was infamous for malevolent forces residing in them. The group of friends managed to survive a few days with little food and water that was available in the house. The bond of friendship started to diminish between the friends as the supply of food and water became lesser and lesser. Eventually, all the resources got exhausted and the friends started hallucinating. I already anticipated a repellent scene that was about to come on screen. Due to extreme starvation, lack of water and evil forces acting on them, the characters started losing their sanity and ended up not just raping one another but killing and eating each other’s flesh. The gruesome details showcased in the movie made me feel nothing but hatred towards the characters. I do not think I am ever watching these kinds of movies. The movie certainly left a lasting impression in my mind which was extremely unpleasant. Had I seen the rating of the movie before watching it, I would have never watched this movie. The genre itself is not my cup of tea. I would rather watch a movie that motivates and restores my faith in humanity than the one that makes me loathe it.
