Topic: Elucidate on the concept of Social Darwinism

Sample Answer:

The concept of eugenics can be identified to be hovering on the developments of human genetics in the contemporary world. In the late 19th century, the concept of social Darwinism was found embedded with the notion of Eugenics which was mainly the period of rationalizing biological inequalities, fitness and competition. Analogies of Darwinism were growing popular with various theorists introducing it in the concept of “survival of the fittest”. The belief of social Darwinism came from the fact that for the unfit, biology was considered as a destiny and the social traits which can be identified in the social spectrum including mental illness or pauperism was the result of heredity. The term Eugenics came into existence in 1883 when the cousin of Charles Darwin, Francis Galton was promoting the ideas of ‘perfecting the human race by getting rid of its “undesirables” while multiplying its “desirables”. Effectively, the concept of Social Darwinism finds its relevance with Eugenics which has been an attempt since the 19th century to bring racial improvements in the society. The thought of eliminating the negative traits derived from heredity has been considered important in terms of selection of humans for the purpose of reproduction which need to include positive traits encouraging procreation which is fit rather than unfit. In the contemporary world where science has advanced it can be identified that genetic counseling is a common prospect based on which it is advised to patients regarding any sort of subtypes species for instance, typical labeled fetuses if tests positive for trisomy 21 might have the possibility of Down Syndrome. Accordingly, the counselors advise against such reproduction. Considering that biological process of reproduction requires mating with natural selection of human species and the presence of negative traits as stated in Social Darwinism in terms of mental illness or pauperism needs elimination. Eugenics is deeply rooted in social darwinism considering that the concept of improving the mate of human species was derived in the 19th century which in modern genetics is also trying to inculcate.

Topic: What do you know about genetic engineering?

Sample Answer:

In biological terms, natural selection and selective breeding are two different approaches or processes of reproduction. Accordingly, natural breeding is about the automatic process which does not involve concepts of good or bad, beautiful or ugly, etc and selective breeding is based on value judgements. In reproductive aspects, viability is important for both natural and selective breeding but the latter requires certain characteristics which are judged for their value. Eugenics, accordingly, can be identified as an older concept which is relevant to selective breeding as it focuses on race improvement of the human species. The idea of Eugenics finds its relevance since the 19th century when the term was coined. Genetic engineering came into focus in the 1960s and 1970s with the discovery of restriction enzymes. The concept of heredity being the reason for negative or positive traits among the humans have been part of the Eugenics since a long time. With the coming of genetic engineering, it may be identified that restriction enzymes have been discovered which are made by bacteria and it cuts the DNA chains into specific sites. It is because of genetic engineering that the improvement in medical science was possible which led to the creation of insulin made in bacteria for treating patients with diabetes. The use of the genetic engineering has been attributed with even the bioweapon industry where the use of the former could be made to manipulate the genes for the creation of new pathogenic characters which aimed for enhancing the weapon’s efficacy. The race improvement that has been attributed with human reproductive changes in case of bioweapons where the improvement is brought in terms of enhancing the efficacy of the weapons. Genetic engineering has made possible for the scientific discoveries and developments whereby new ways of understanding how race improvement can be done is identified and assessed and genetic counselors have been able to advise against negative traits or genes that a fetus might incur. Hence, while Eugenics is a concept which dates back to the time of Darwinism, genetic engineering is the modern science of eugenics which focuses on the improvement of human species.
