Topic: Explain fire gilding of arms and armor.

Sample Answer:

Gilding can be defined as the application of gold to the surface of some other material. There are several techniques that are utilized for accomplishing this. However, gilding requires a finishing touch. There is a necessity of shine on the object that is achieved by burnishing. Gilding is done by inlaying a surface with a gold wire or overlaying with sheets of gold that have a brilliance over them. A very common way of gilding is to adhere an illuminating gold leaf to a surface with an oil based adhesive or water-soluble size over gesso, as it is typically used on picture frames. Gilding objects helps with a glaring and glimmering shine that is admired by individuals. The Metropolitan Museum's Arms and Armor Department has numerous magnificent pieces of fire-gilt armor and weapons on exhibit. The armor for field and tournament is perhaps the most spectacular example, which has been gilded throughout, primarily for its beautiful visual and shimmering effect, but also to protect the delicately etched steel surface from corrosion. The mix of bluing and gilding seen in George Clifford's armor, with its unusual clashing patterns of gold and heat-blued steel, is equally striking. Firegilding might also be simply applied to etching recesses, rivet heads, or as part of a decorative area. Henry II of France's armor features gilding, an intricately embossed surface, regions of bluing, and patches of silvering.

Topic: Burnishing makes an art look beautiful. Justify.

Sample Answer:

Burnishing is layering and blending coloured pencil layers until no paper tooth is visible. To avoid contamination of lighter colors, the artist paints lighter regions first, layering lighter colors on top of darker hues with low pressure to give the art a glaring finish. Following the layering of all colors, the artist blends—or radiances—everything but the deepest hue in a given color region, using white or any light color, depending on the intended result. The same color sequence is then applied to the full color area to improve the brilliance of the painting. This step is repeated until the coloured pencil areas completely cover the paper underneath them and no tooth is visible. Prismacolor is used to create all of the colors in presentation and give sparkling finish to paintings.
