Band 6.5 Answer
‘The above table clearly depicts that households in the US have become much smaller in the past 200 years. Households in 1790 had an average of 5.4 members which decreased to 4.9 in 1890. It again dipped further in 1990, the figure had decreased by almost half to just 2.6.
In 1790, 35.8% of all households had seven members. Households with just one member were the minimum, with just 3.7% of households with 1 just person. The size of 7 member households was still the most common household size in 1890 but there was a significant decrease in the percentage distribution of the number of households which had dropped slightly to 23%.
One-person households were the least common, the percentage of this kind of household was lesser than 4% of the total in both 1790 and 1890. The most common percentage distribution of the number of households was 4 persons, representing a total of 13.9% and 15.1% in 1790 and 1890 respectively. It can be seen that from 1990, there as been a bigger change in the percentage of distribution in the number of households. There was an 2.6 people every household with as high as 32% of them having 2 persons in one household to as low as 1.4% of households having 7 persons.
Band 7 Answer
The above table represents the proportion of households in the US by size focusing on the yars from 1790 to 1990 thereby identifying changes over a period of 200 years. It can be seen the proportion of households in 1790 were larger with at least 7 people living within the same household. This accounted for as high as 35.8% people living in the same household which means on an average there was at least 5.4 peopple. On the other hand, while houeholds pertaining to 1 or 2 people existed even in 1790, it was around 3.7% amd 7.8% respectively. In 1890, the numbers decreased with only 23% of households having 7 people and mostly having ariund 3-4 people in the house considering the proportion rating to 16.7% and 16.8% for 3 and 4 persons per household respectively.
However, by 1990, there had been a significant change in the per cent distribution of the number of households. In 1990, close to 1% of the household had seven members, while the maximum of all households consisted of only one or two people. Maximum households by 1990, have 2 person family totally 32.2% of in all.
Similar to 7 person households in 1990, 5 and 6 person households witness a steep decline as compared to the same kind of households in 1890. In 1990, the percentage of 5 person households was 6.7%, a decrease from 15.1% in 1890. Similarly, the percentage of 6 person households which was 11.6% in 1890 decreased to 2.3% in 1990.
Band 7.5 Answer
The given table illustrates clear details about the proportion of households in the US by size. It has clearly focused on 200 years of household sizes from 1790 to 1990 that identifies major changes. In 1790 It can be seen the proportion of households were larger with at least 7 people living within the same household. This includes household size for as high as 35.8% people who lived in the same household which means on an average there was at least 5.4 people. On the other hand, 3.7% amd 7.8% respectively, houeholds held only 1 or 2 people existed even in 1790.
In 1890, the numbers certainly decreased for people wit 7 memnbers with only 23% While on the other hand, 3-4 people in the house considering the proportion rating to 16.7% and 16.8% for 3 and 4 persons per household respectively. which can be considered as an increase in the nuclear familes. From1990, tthe change the proportion of households increased for the 1-2 people living in the same household compared to 1790-1890. There was an 2.6 people every household with as high as 32% of them having 2 persons in one household to as low as 1.4% of households having 7 persons.
