Topic: The charts below give information about USA marriage and divorce rates between 1970 and 2000, and the marital status of adult Americans in two of the years. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
Band 6 Answer
There are two bar graphs given based on the marriage and divorces taking place in the USA and another graph portraying the marital status in the USA. The first bar graph shows the number of marriages and divorces in the US for thirty years from 1970 to 2000. The second bar graph illustrates the number of American adults from different marital statuses in 1970 and 2000. The overall view from the bar graphs shows that the number of people married in the US has a downward slope.
The majority of Americans in both the years have been recorded more percentage to be single in 2000. It is also, visible that from 1970 to 1980, there were 2.5 million marriages registered. However, The number decreased with gradual time by the year 2000. In comparison, the number of divorce cases has reached a pinnacle. In the year 1970, the number of divorce cases filed was around 1.5 million. The number of divorce cases has increased in 2000 in comparison to 1970. The number of divorce cases fell back up to 1 million in the year 2000, which was exactly 50% in comparison to the number of marriages. The overall percentage of marriages declined up to 70% in 1970 and it was around 60% in 2000. The marginal decrease in the ratio of widowed people, divorcees, and single is also visible. The bar graph also reflects that the married people and divorced people ratio was been slight increases up to 8%. Lastly, to conclude it is evident that the overall marriage cases have declined and the number of divorce cases has increased over these three decades.
Band 6.5 Answer
The above-given bar diagram illustrates the number of marriages and divorces in the USA from the year 1970 to 2000. The second bar graph shows data about the marital status of adult Americans. The graph clearly reflects that the marriage rate in 1970 has decreased in thirty years. It shows that from 1970 to 2000 the marriage rate had drastic fall around 2 million. In comparison, the divorce rate which was around 1 million in 1970 increased and became 1.5 million in 1980. But the divorce cases decreased by nearly around 1 million in the year 2000.
The number of marriages cases remained unchanged between 1970 and 1980, whereas the number of divorce cases increased from 1 million to 1.4 million within a decade. The number of marriage cases decreased by 0.1 million in 1990, simultaneously the divorce cases decreased by 0.3 million. The second bar graph depicts that 70% of adult Americans were married whereas 15% stayed single. It also illustrates that the percentage of widowed and divorced people has declined to 10% in the year 2000 in comparison to the previous decades. By the year 2000, it is also seen that the married population declined up to 10%, and the single and divorced people ratio has increased in thirty years. It can be concluded that marriage cases in the US have declined over the three decades while divorce cases have increased in the US.
Band 7 Answer
The first bar chart shows the marriages and divorces in the USA from 1970 to 2000. The second bar chart illustrates the marital status of adult Americans. From the bar chart, it can be observed that marriage in 1970 and 1980 remained constant. It started to decline after 1980. In 1970 and 1980 the percentage of marriage cases was around 2.5 million. However, the cases decreased to 2.3 million around 1980. The cases again decline up to 2 million in the year 2000.
The least divorce cases can be seen in 1970 and in the year 2000, the cases of marriages and divorces increased simultaneously. The highest number of divorce cases was around 1.4 million which is visible in 1990, the cases gradually decreased up to 1.1 million in later 1990. It can be also seen that around 1970, the ratio of adult Americans that were married was around 70%. The number of unmarried adult Americans was around 15%. In the year 2000, the married cases were 59% and it recorded a decline of 2% in 1970 and 8% in 2000. lastly, the overall number of people getting married is decreasing and the number of divorce cases is increasing over the years.
