Strategies to Answer Table Completion Questions

It includes IELTS exam preparation and reading skills. The preparation part requires the analytical part and grammar part. These three steps can be enumerated as follows:

  • Table Analysis

With a lot of practising previous year question papers and model papers on Collegedununia, you will not get panicked by seeing the table. You first see the form, structure and layout of the table at first glance. Read the headings. Then, read the remaining contents from left to right. Read second time also, if the table is less understandable. Now you get some best idea to underline very important specific words. This strategy lets you outline the information in the given passage about the table.

  • Grammar -Identification

Table analysis and grammar identification are not the two steps in sequence. But they are simultaneously running processes. For the sake of your convenience, it is explained under a separate heading. Identify parts of speech of different words in the table like noun, verb, adverb, and adjective. Now guess what could be the parts of speech of the word which is required to be filled up. Besides this number of the noun is also important. Whether it is the singular or plural form. This will give a clue to select a word from the word bank that is synonymous with the chosen word. This step is significant concerning the spelling of the word and grammar to obtain a point in the IELTS.

  • Scan the Passage

The table analysis gives you the total summary or theme of the passage. This aspect lets you find out a part of the passage that has the required information. The second step will help you catch the relevant part of speech in that particular part of the passage. Find out the word which matches your answer in both the perspective of grammar and synonym. Take this part of the passage as a reference point for your right answer.

  • Key Word Comparison

It is better to underline related keywords in the table and the located part of the passage. Match the keywords to judge whether that would be the probable answer or not. Your scrap notes also help you a lot in picking out the answer.

Once you make analyse and study the table and passage then start answering the questions.

  2. Read the instructions carefully to have an idea about both the table, passage, and answer in it.
  3. The question can be given in a different form, but the procedure same for all.
  4. Attempt answering questions in an order to finish the task systematically.
  5. The given questions will mostly be in the order of the text.

  8. Your selected word should be of the same parts of speech as per the word needed in gap filling.
  9. The exact word as in the paragraph will not be given. Mostly synonyms are given. So better look for synonyms for your answer.
  10. Scan the passage to locate your answer.
  11. There is no need for reading the entire passage from A to Z or word for word, as you read your textbook. Time is a constraint in the IELTS exam. Find a reference point described above.

  13. A regular practice will keep you well-composed while reading both the table and some reference points. Or else, synonyms and paraphrased information may puzzle you.
