How Children Learn Languages Reading Answers

Learning a language is one of the best processes which supports an individual to explore by crossing limits. Especially children have a natural potential to learn new languages irrespective of their first language. Experts have derived a pattern in which children would tend to learn languages. This pattern includes 1. Hearing sounds, 2. Grasping words, and 3. Sentence formation.

The first point of communication is to hear sound and try to reciprocate. ‘Phonemes’ is the term used to determine the sound a language uses. The curiosity level of a child is multiple times higher than in the grownups. This is because everything a child hears is new to them and they want to know what it means. The golden rule in language learning is to keep talking with the child repeatedly. Children learn languages by hearing the sounds around them. So always make sure they are surrounded by healthy languages. The more the better. Talk to your child in a language you want them to learn. Give the child some time to respond, then tell them what you think they might want to say.

The second stage of language learning is grasping words. ‘Word Boundaries’ is the term used when a child starts to differentiate a word's ending and a new word’s beginning. Children are actually learning ‘morphemes’. That is breaking a word and that broken word also makes a meaning. For instance, let's take ‘Unbreakable' and the morphemes would be ‘un’, ‘Break’, ‘able’. Make a habit of reading to your child (topics remain child-centric) as this method will make their language skills better. They will start to correlate meaning with the word they hear, eventually it would result in their vocabulary improving.

The third stage is learning to form sentences. Once a child identifies a word and remembers its meaning. Now the child has to use that word in a sentence in the correct form. For Instance, the kid has to learn that in the English language we say “ I am Hungry” not “am hungry I”. To develop correct sentence formation in a child, you must speak to them slowly and clearly by directly looking into their eyes. Wait till they respond and do not interrupt them. If they get stuck while phrasing a sentence, give them an idea. Keep asking your child a lot of questions which eventually helps them to form sentences to respond in the same language. Never ignore their questions as well, respond to them and even correct their question formation if it's wrong. The more dialogues and communication, the faster a child learns languages.

For a child to learn a language, it completely depends on multiple factors such as age, mother tongue, tutors, surroundings. For instance, if a child speaks Hindi as a first language and wishes to learn English. Then you must create an environment for the child where he/she finds a lot of opportunities to use English when communicating. Never make your child feel embarrassed when he/she speaks in a new language they are learning. This will result in demotivation and a change in attitude towards learning a new language. Try to find multiple encouraging methods and a healthy environment that would make the child show more involvement and interest in learning the language.

It has been proved by many profound researchers that children who learn more than one language tend to be much better in academics when compared with others. By knowing multiple languages, the child can express his/her thoughts in multiple ways. You can observe an increase in their problem-solving skills and memory power as well.

For a child, learning starts at home. So for a child to learn a language, the environment at home plays a vital role. Make your child socialize with others. Reading a bedtime story will increase your child's listening habit thus resulting in language learning. Make them repeat after you, this will let a child know how to form pitches and pronounce. Read a short story to your child and ask them to repeat the story. You will be amazed at how different their interpretation of the story is. Finally, ask a child to read a paragraph and explain it to you. This will benefit in multiple aspects such as reading skill, observation skill, vocabulary skill, and effective command over the language.
