Topic: The two graphs below show the percentages of smokers and the consumption of alcohol in litres in selected countries, for the period 1960 – 2000.

Band 6 Answer

In the two line graphs, the percentage of people who smoked and drank alcohol between the years 1960 and 2000. It is displayed for three different nations: the United States, Japan, and Holland. The percentage is indicated in litres. The percentage of smokers generally showed a tendency toward decline.

The amount of alcohol drunk per person in Holland reached its highest point, however, when compared to the other two nations. The percentage of smokers in America in 1960 was 40%. It then slightly fell throughout the course of the next 20 years, falling by more than 35%. Following that, it instantly and abruptly fell by 15%. Most notably, whereas the data for Holland was near to 60% and crossed over to Japan at the same time. The data for Japan began at close to 50% in 1960 and decreased by 3% during the ensuing 20 years. Then, both countries had a fall of roughly 10% throughout the course of the year, following a similar trajectory.
