Gradable and Ungradable Adjectives for IELTS

To achieve a high band score on the IELTS test, you must demonstrate your ability to use diverse word forms. If you want to avoid using repetitive language, use novel words in English tests. The use of Adjectives is always useful to have in your vocabulary to accomplish a good IELTS band score. By using adjectives you can generally add interesting meaning to the sentence.

Gradable Adjectives

There are some adjectives, which can be graded as very, much, little, a bit, etc. These adjectives are called Gradable adjectives.

Adjectives:- angry, big, boring, cheap, cold, frightening, funny, interesting, old, pretty, excellent, boiling, enormous, terrible, exhausted, furious

  1. Good

Sentence: The performance of the students was very good on the Diamond Jubilee

The taste of the momo from the nearby stall was quite good.

  1. Angry

Sentence: Rita became very angry after knowing the matter.

I know that my mother will be a little angry if I don’t finish my tiffin

  1. Big

Sentence: The baby exclaimed by seeing an elephant, “Such a big animal!”

It is a very big opportunity for him to take up, he should not let it go.

  1. Boring

Sentence: It is very boring to sit idle at home

The film that we saw yesterday was quite boring.

  1. Cheap

Sentence: The cheapest clothes are available at New Market

The bag which he had bought is much cheap than mine

  1. Cold

Sentence: The weather is a bit cold today

It was very cold last December.

  1. Frightening

Sentence: The child got very frightened at the sight of the accident

They were not at all frightened by the threat of the politicians

  1. Interesting

Sentence: The story that she narrated was very interesting

The story behind the film was not much interesting

  1. Hot

Sentence: The food served by the hotel was very hot

The milk was too hot for the child, that she could not drink it

  1. Funny

Sentence: Abraham is a very funny boy

The story narrated by Mita was quite funny

  1. Pretty

Sentence: The baby boy of that couple was very pretty

The dress she bought is much pretty than that of Amrita

  1. Exhausted

Sentence: We were totally exhausted by the time we reached our hotel

A students were little exhausted by the bus journey in their excursion

  1. Furious

Sentence: Their pet dog is very furious

The Black Panthers are more furious than tigers

  1. Terrible

Sentence: My father was in a very terrible condition in the accident

The suicide incident is terrible.

  1. Fascinating

Sentence: I am extremely much fascinated by her story

The children were highly fascinated by hearing the autobiography of Don Bosco

Ungradable Adjectives

The adjectives which cannot be graded are called ungradable adjectives. They can be used with totally/ absolutely, etc.

Adjectives:- acceptable, dead, finished, free, impossible, necessary, perfect, ruined, unacceptable, amazing, ancient, awful.

  1. Acceptable

Sentence: His proposal was acceptable

The suggestion made by Rahul was acceptable

  1. Dead

Sentence: The person lay dead still on the road

He was dead, by the time we took him to the hospital

  1. Free

Sentence: The services provided by them are free of cost

The unknown man gave this book to me for free.

  1. Impossible

Sentence: It is impossible to complete the task before dawn

She has done an impossible task by making the foreign delegates sign contracts with us.

  1. Necessary

Sentence: It is necessary to wear a saree on the special occasion

An eye witness was necessary to prove the crime

  1. Perfect

Sentence: Look at the dress! It fits on me perfectly

The administration was capable enough to handle the case perfectly

  1. Ruined

Sentence: The rain shall totally ruin our day

These mischievous boys have totally ruined the silence of the class.

  1. Unacceptable

Sentence: It is not at all acceptable that Rajiv has done such a blunder

Two thousand rupees has become unacceptable

  1. Amazing

Sentence: The show was really amazing

Minakshi’s performance on the teacher’s day was amazing

  1. Starving

Sentence: The boy was really starving for 4 days, due to lack of food.

I am really starving, what’s there on the menu?

  1. Enormous

Sentence: Their house is absolutely enormous

The school playground is enormous
