Topic: Some people believe the government should spend money on building train and subway lines to reduce traffic congestion. Others think that building more and wider roads is the better way to reduce traffic congestion. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

It is torture to stand in traffic for hours. For many people, traffic congestion has become a nightmare. There are cities where if one gets stuck in traffic, they have to stand for 4-5 hours.

To avoid this suffering and loss of time, many suggest that the government should spend money on building trains and subways. Others think that wider roads will help to solve this traffic congestion problem. Both of these methods might or might not be effective. The essay below discusses the effectiveness of these factors.
Building trains and subways are proven effective methods to control traffic congestion as per data. People have saved time traveling in countries where trains and subway lines are available. This distribution of traffic helps reduce travel time. it also costs lesser money to travel. The amount spent on fuel is much higher than the cost of tickets for trains. If more people travel by trains and subways, lesser vehicles will be available on the roads. This will reduce traffic congestion. Also, a lot of fuel will be saved which will not harm our natural resources. Trains and subways have their own advantages but also come with disadvantages. They might break down in the middle of the track which will cause delay. However, this will not cause traffic congestion.
On the other hand, some people think that building wider roads will solve the problem of traffic congestion. Yes, wider roads will have more space to travel. The area will be wider and hence, the density of vehicles traveling will feel lesser. However, this will not stop the free-flowing traffic. Cars will increase and if any car gets punctured or if any accidents happen on the road, it will cause congestion. It is a fact that wider roads will reduce traffic but when vehicles are on the road, congestion can happen at any time. This will cause a delay in traffic. Both the methods discussed above will definitely reduce traffic but the best way is to build train and subway lines.

Band 7 IELTS Essay

With the increasing number of vehicles, traffic has become one of the most common problems in most countries. Some people believe that building train and subway lines will help reduce traffic. Some other groups of people believe that making the roads wider will help the traffic conditions.

Roads nowadays are full of private cars and vehicles. People prefer their own car due to comfort. This is causing increased traffic congestion. One way to avoid traffic is by building trains and subway lines. We have seen many examples where trains and subway lines carry most of the people which helped reduce the traffic on the road. However, the condition of the trains and subway lines should be improved and up to the mark. If people do not feel comfortable while traveling, they will prefer their own vehicles. The government should invest more in building affordable and comfortable trains and subway lines. This will not only reduce traffic but will save people money and fuel.
There is also another group of people who think that making the roads wider will reduce traffic. I believe that making the roads wider and building new roads might reduce the density of the traffic but not the traffic itself. Making wider roads does not totally solve the problem as traffic will increase day by day. It might prevent the congestion for a few years but again it will return to normal. Traveling by road is always risky as vehicles may break down in the middle of the road. This will increase the traffic. Hence, both have their own advantages and disadvantages. People and the government must think before proceeding.

Band 6 IELTS Essay

Traffic is increasing in most countries like wildfire. The government has been trying to limit traffic by various means. Some believe that building subway and train lines will help. Some others believe that building wider roads will reduce traffic. Both have their points or arguments. We will discuss the above points in this essay.

Some people think that the government should spend more money on building trains and subway lines because they are easier to travel, faster, and more convenient. If the trains and subways are up to the mark, people will love traveling in them. Everyone tries to avoid the hassle and travel comfortably. They get that comfort in their car. This in turn increases the traffic. Making better subway and train lines will reduce the traffic on the road. More people will travel via trains. This will also save them money. Less traffic on roads has many advantages. Tens and thousands of gallons of fuel will be saved, harmful gasses will not deplete the environment, and will reduce noise pollution. So, this seems to be a good idea to reduce the traffic.
On the other hand, building wider roads will decrease the density of traffic. This will not actually decrease the number of vehicles but they will get more space to travel. This might decrease the congestion on the road but it will not help with pollution and natural resources like fuel. To build wider roads, the government might need to cut down trees which will lead to added global warming. I do understand that people will be able to save much time and money but this will not help in the greater run.
