Topic: Some people believe today that everyone has a right to access to the Internet and that governments should provide this access for free. Other people believe that access to the internet is not a right and should be paid for like other services. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Model Answer 1:

Free internet access to the masses has always been a debatable topic. Some people believe that people must be provided with free internet access, however, others oppose the same. Personally, I believe that internet access must be charged and must not be free of cost. The following paragraphs will illustrate this point. The Internet today is a necessity for both our personal and professional life. There is not a single sector out there that is not relying on the internet for effective services. When the pandemic hit the nation people relied on the internet to accomplish their tasks be it their work or to connect with their friends, family, and relatives across the globe. The pandemic taught us how the internet has become an integral part of our lives. Thus, the internet is a fundamental right for everyone and people must have free access to the same. However, when something is provided for free its quality inadvertently declines. Free internet access will provide fast and unhindered services however, there is a chance of cyber crime increasing at an alarming rate. Hacking is another factor that is expected to increase. Open access to the wifi is risky, which is why people avoid connecting to them for security concerns. Thus a secure connection to the internet is therefore essential. Moreover, internet usage is very wide and common nowadays, which makes it a reliable source of revenue for the government.
Even though the internet has become a necessity nowadays, I do not, however, believe that it should be free. People should pay for the internet services they use as it creates a huge revenue which can further be used for development. If the government considers a free service that should only be provided to the educational institutions where the students can access reading materials for free. An individual should know how to make free use of the internet in a proper manner. Many students coming to educational institutions are not from well-off families. So for them spending a usual amount for internet recharge can be a recurring cost. So the government can make free access to the students within a certain limit just to curb the misuse of this internet service.

Model Answer 2:

According to me, the government must provide free access to the internet to the citizens of the country. Whereas there are others that believe that the internet must not be provided to people for free. Firstly, the internet has become a necessity not just in education but also in work development, entertainment, and so on. One of the factors that can control the economy of a nation is the transformation of the internet over the past two decades. Portugal is one of the countries that provide free internet access to all. USA, Canada, Singapore, etc., are some of the countries that provide public access to the internet. The Internet today has changed the way we work, socialize, change the way we share information with one another, and so on. The internet accounted for over 21 percent growth in the GDP over the past five years. Thus, it is sufficient to say that an online connection is directly related to the development of nations. Thus, the government, policymakers, and businesses must recognize the transformation of the internet and embrace the opportunities that it can create. Not to forget the security and privacy risk that the internet entails, which is also something the government should work on. It is necessary to develop a healthy internet ecosystem, one that benefits the users and nurtures human capital. All-in-all it will maximize the impact of the internet on economic growth. I do believe that as the internet has become a necessity it must be provided with free access to all and the government should also simultaneously focus on the security and privacy risks that it entails. If the internet ecosystem is nurtured in a better way free internet access can provide tremendous benefits to the users and society can thrive.

Model Answer 3:

It is no exaggeration to say that the internet has transformed each and every aspect of our lives. A portion of society is of the opinion that the internet is a basic right of all people thus, must be provided free of cost to all. Whereas there is a part of the society that believes that it must not be provided free of cost. The following paragraphs will elaborate on these points. The internet today has become a vital part of the world today. It has benefited us in a multitude of ways. Without internet access, the world would not have transformed as it has now. Official work, e-learning, banking, and online payments all rely on the internet. E-learning has become a major part of education today. Many youngsters enroll for courses online at universities such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and so on. Thus, one of the benefits of the internet is that a person sitting in any corner of the world can access these courses and thereby enhance their skills. Banking is another important sector that heavily relies on the internet. Unlike the olden times when users had to go to the bank to check their balance with the advance in technology, and a running high-speed internet connection, users can now access their banking details online. As a majority of job sectors are dependent on the internet for their work, due to these reasons, it is evident that the government has to consider the options to provide this great innovative technology to their citizens for free of cost. Nonetheless, other sections of people, including me, hold the opinion that the internet must be maintained as a paid service. There are parts of society that are still unaware of internet service. The rich and the educated are using the internet on a daily basis, however, there are some that are still ignorant regarding the same. Thus, the government must work on educating this segregated part of the society and also the safe use of the internet. It is obvious that free access to the internet will allow it to be misused in numerous ways. It will thereby increase cybercrime activities such as hacking, cyberbullying, and so on. Thus, I believe that the internet, even though it has become a necessity, must not be provided free of cost. The government should continue to offer the Internet as a paid service and should divert the revenue collected from it for the betterment of the people and society as a whole.
