Topic: In Some Countries, The Government Has Tried To Reduce Traffic By Imposing A Congestion Tax During Rush Hours. Do you think this development is positive or negative?

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

The whole world is facing the problem of traffic congestion. This is not only causing an economic loss for the country but also increasing pollution. There are some peak hours during which the employees leave for their workplace. For example morning 9-11 A.M., Most people go to work at this time of the day. In addition, the college and school students around 9 AM in the morning are also responsible for traffic congestion. In the evening, similar congestion occurs between 5:30 PM to 8 PM. Most people try to return home after college and office hours have ended. Hence, many nations are levying congestion taxes on citizens during peak hours. In my opinion, this will impact the financial stability between the people and the government. In this essay, we will discuss if this is a positive or negative development.
There are multiple issues that can be discussed regarding this congestion tax on an individual in peak hours. The most important is that it will impact the economic stability of every individual and family. Since most people are officegoers, they have a fixed salary. Imposing an extra payment will cause havoc among people. Some shift workers are forced to work in certain shifts due to their job requirements. This is non-negotiable and hence cannot help/avoid traveling during peak traffic hours. They need to visit the office during those hours. Even if the office distributes the working time, it will not help. There are different client requirements at different times. The banking sector, for instance, is one such industry that needs to operate during the daily busy day hours supporting its customers. Moreover, to ensure businesses, and the stock market exchange. Therefore, this is not a fair deal to make employees pay additional congestion taxes out of their salaries. The salaries were low compared with other countries worldwide. This will result in an excessive financial burden on the working middle class and have huge economic implications for society to a larger extent.
The secondary issues which are to be mentioned are that imposing taxes is a non-sustainable solution. This type of mechanism will not work in the long run for further years. There is even no guarantee that the traffic issues will reduce in the future. This is very unfair because such taxes could bring in short-term benefits. However, a better-structured approach focusing on shared transportation and improving the public transport network is necessary. This would bring in long-term benefits to society and the working community. Moreover, during the pandemic when the majority of the population is struggling to meet their daily ends, tax imposition will affect the masses.
I believe that imposing taxes will not solve the issue, rather it will create more. there should be a balance between shared transportation and private vehicles. People if travel in the public transport, will cause less traffic. The office also should be lenient towards this and encourage employees.

Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

To deal with traffic on the roads and junctions, during peak hours, most of government officials in certain countries have introduced a congestion tax. In my personal opinion, this is a positive development. It will encourage industries to move to low-pollution and eco-friendly changes and help governments to generate revenue.
The advantage of imposing a congestion tax during peak hours is making the large corporations re-strategize their office setup and the working shifts. In other words, the working population in any country that travels on roads makes up about 60% of the total traffic volume. If any such traffic congestion tax is implied in the working community. These employees would however raise concerns with their employers complaining about money and the annual pay. This might encourage some companies to move their operations to rural areas. As a result, the traffic will reduce significantly.
Also, the rise in the traffic crisis and road accidents is primarily due to the lack of accountability for the public, those who are using public amenities. In such a case I strongly appreciate the government for the imposition of the tax on the public who were neglecting the public guidelines. Moreover, these tax impositions will make the co-workers of the same company share the ride and hence they can save fuel and also the environment.
Hence when this situation is viewed according to the road crisis happening these days and the pollution levels. Especially at traffic signals during peak hours cause eye problems because of the release of the sulfur nitrides used in the fuel of the vehicles.
In conclusion, the imposition of the congestion tax on the public only during peak hours will definitely make some changes individually. So that they can change the working shifts accordingly and can give way for the needed ones earlier.

Band 6 IELTS Essay

Because of the rapid development of current society, traffic congestion is an increasing issue among the public mainly in large metropolitan cities. In some bigger nations, the government imposed a congestion tax as a measure to decrease traffic during the rush time or sometimes called peak time. In my personal opinion, such an approach is a positive development in this modern society which can be done from the government side.
Primarily when this congestion tax is considered as an effective measure of modern urban traffic management. Congestion pricing plays a major and significant role in the development of the socio-economic balance. To begin with, congestion pricing will make people avoid commuting by private cars during rush time. Indeed, most people could be encouraged to use public transport more or drive cars away, especially during peak time. Secondly, as an additional tax imposition, congestion pricing is increasing the government revenue in some ways which will be beneficial to the public. For example, governments could use this tax revenue to construct and run more efficient and effective traffic systems. Finally, charging a congestion tax is an effective solution to reduce traffic congestion when this type of identical situation prevails.
On the other hand, this kind of extra expense will impose a burden on some innocent middle-class people. Transport services, as example, will increase the expense of the business running. Because whether the tax will be charged or not, they have to drive the cars all the time day and night as their service. Besides, it is true that this financial burden eventually will be distributed to all of us due to the increasing price. Furthermore, people who cannot avoid traveling out of rush time will suffer to their own personal extent. Overall, it seems that congestion pricing will eventually impact people’s lives and some petty businesses.
In conclusion, although there are some negative effects due to charging a congestion tax, we cannot ignore the positive side of this solution. This certainly helps the government to achieve congestion reduction to some extent. I believe that this congestion pricing is a positive development that is entirely justified despite there being some different views in different perspectives.
