Government and Individuals are spending too much Money on National Celebrations IELTS Writing Task 2

A large sum of money is spent on some important celebrations of a country. First of all, governments are spending a fixed proportion of their budget on holding events to celebrate these occasions. For instance, a lot of money is paid for fireworks on New Year’s eve in many countries around the globe. And secondly, any individual also spends money on celebrations and parties with their families, which is a common habit amongst people in many areas. For example, my parents and I often have dinner on the last day of every year.

However, I truly believe there are benefits of public spending on national celebrations, and hence it is completely justifiable. The first and foremost advantage is that this is an evident way to preserve the culture of a nation. To illustrate more, Lunar New Year is an important occasion of Vietnamese culture. So, celebrations for this occasion are necessary to remind younger generations of this tradition. Additionally, since these occasions are usually the only times for family members to have time and enjoy themselves together. It is understandable that people would want to spend money on something that makes them happy. Finally, as there are only a few national celebrations in a year, the amount of money spent on those days is unlikely to be too much.

In conclusion, I disagree with the idea that people and governments are spending too much money on national occasions.

To start with, some people consider that public celebrations are a waste of government resources, especially in monetary terms. They think such events have no gain and do not contribute to the development of a country, But, they burden the national treasury. People believe that the government should focus more on its vulnerable areas and allocate funds to improve the dire conditions of its underdeveloped regions. But if you see the other perspective of this expense is unity, a sense of joy rather than lavishly on celebrations.

The public celebrated events are different for every country and are a strong resemblance of their culture, tradition, and history. In addition, these celebrations have proved to boost the tourism industry. As people travel to other countries they can experience different cultures, there is no better way than to plan a visit when public celebrations are in full swing in a host country.

For instance, 26th January is publicly celebrated in my country. This day has great significance in Republic day in India; therefore, a national parade is conducted every year with participants from all over India. People from nearby countries come to enjoy this parade, and it is a great learning experience for future generations as well. Therefore, it is easy to see why public celebrations are necessary.

Hence I feel the only logical conclusion is that spending on public celebrations is important for a country.

True, a significant amount of money is being spent on some of a country's most major events. To begin with, governments are devoting a portion of their resources to commemorating historical milestones. On New Year's Eve, for example, many countries throughout the world spend a lot of money on fireworks. Second, people spend money on parties and celebrations with their relatives, which is a widespread practice in many locations. For example, every year on the last day of the year, my parents and I have a special meal.

Festivals and national holidays are perhaps the most eagerly anticipated occasions of the year. The best part about public celebrations is that it brings people together. For instance, Diwali is celebrated in all parts of India. This festival not only brings people together but also helps them stay connected with their culture and values. People hardly get an opportunity to meet each other. In this case, festivals are the only occasions they get together. Price cannot measure the joy one gets from spending time with one’s dear ones.

Diwali is the busiest shopping season in India. It is true that people spend enormous amounts of money on gifts, sweets and fireworks. But one cannot overlook the boost this Diwali spending gives to the Indian economy. In the same way, Christmas and the associated holiday shopping season bring cheer to the US and several other economies. They invoke a sense of unity among the people across the globe. And hence the argument that public celebrations are a waste of money doesn’t hold much stand.
