Read the Passage to Answer the Following Questions
Many power plants today use fossil fuels as a heat source to boil water. The steam from the boiling water rotates a large turbine, which activates a generator that produces electricity. However, new generations of power plants, with concentrating solar power systems, use the sun as a heat source. There are three main types of concentrating solar power systems: parabolic-trough, dish/engine, and power tower. Parabolic-trough systems concentrate the sun's energy through long rectangular, curved (U-shaped) mirrors. These mirrors are tilted toward the sun, focusing sunlight on a pipe that runs down the centre of the trough. This heats the oil flowing through the pipe. The hot oil is then used to boil water in a conventional steam generator to produce electricity. A dish/engine system uses a mirrored dish (similar to a very large satellite dish). The dish-shaped sicrface collects and concentrates the sun's heat onto a receiver, which absorbs the heat and transfers it to a fluid within the engine. The heat causes the fluid to expand against a piston or turbine to produce mechanical power. The mechanical power is then used to run a generator or alternator to produce electricity. A power tower system uses a large field of mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto the top of a tower, where a receiver sits. This heats molten salt flowing through the receiver. Then, the salt's heat is used to generate electricity through a conventional steam generator. Molten salt retains heat efficiently, so it can be stored for days before being converted into electricity. That means electricity can be produced on cloudy days or even several hours after sunset.
Solution and Explanation
Questions 1- 7
Complete the following sentences using NOT MORE THAN ONE WORD from the text.
Answer: Steam
Supporting statement: “The steam from the boiling water rotates a large turbine, which activates a generator that produces electricity....”
Keywords: turbine, generator
Keyword Location: para 1, line 2
Explanation: It is given that the steam produced from the heat is used to move other equipment that ultimately produces electricity.
Answer: Three
Supporting statement: “....There are three main types of concentrating solar power systems: parabolic-trough, dish/engine, and power tower......”
Keywords: parabolic, trough
Keyword Location: para 1, line 4
Explanation: It is clearly given that the three main ways of concentrating the power of the sun are parabolic trough, dish and power tower.
Answer: Oil
Supporting statement: “.... This heats the oil flowing through the pipe. The hot oil is then used to boil water in a conventional steam generator to produce electricity.......”
Keywords: conventional, oil
Keyword Location: para 2, line 3
Explanation: It is given that the sun’s rays are used to heat the oil present in the pipe and then it is used to boil water.
Answer: Satellite
Supporting statement: “......A dish/engine system uses a mirrored dish (similar to a very large satellite dish). The dish-shaped surface collects and concentrates the sun's heat onto a receiver, which absorbs the heat and transfers it to a fluid
within the engine......”
Keywords: surface, absorbs
Keyword Location: para 3, LINE 1
Explanation: It is given that the mirrored dish is something that looks similar to the satellite dish. Hence satellite is the correct word.
Answer: Mirrors
Supporting statement: “......A power tower system uses a large field of mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto the top of a tower, where a receiver sits......”
Keywords: Concentrate, tower
Keyword Location: para 4, Line 1
Explanation: It is common to see large mirrors in solar power generating systems. It is used to concentrate the light on the top of the tower. rays will be on top of a (6)..............
Answer: Tower
Supporting statement: “.......A power tower system uses a large field of mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto the top of a tower, where a receiver sits......”
Keywords: Concentrate, tower
Keyword Location: para 4, Line 1
Explanation: As given in the paragraph, large mirrors are used in solar power generating systems to concentrate sunlight on the top of the tower. Hence, tower is the correct answer.
Answer: Salt
Supporting statement: “.......This heats molten salt flowing through the receiver. Then, the salt's heat is used to generate electricity through a conventional steam generator.......”
Keywords: molten, conventional
Keyword Location: para 4, line 2-3
Explanation: As mentioned in the paragraph, the salt is heated by the concentrated sunlight. It is used to create steam that in turn produces electricity.
