IELTS Speaking Topic - Furniture

  1. Do you have a lot of furniture at home?

We have recently shifted to our new house and have decorated the entire house with chique furniture which takes up little space but can be used for multiple purposes. We do have a lot of furniture but since we take up less space, our house looks very spacious and big. Proper placement of furniture is necessary to give your house a good look and to minimize the wastage of space. We have furniture of all sizes which can fit in various corners of the house. We also have various cupboards and tables attached to the walls.

Vocabulary:

  • Decorated: to make a place look good; ornamentation
  • Chique: something which is in fashion and very elegant
  • Spacious: to have a lot of space (in a room)

  1. Is there anyone who bought furniture for you?

When we had decided to shift to a new place, a family of four had sat together to decide who will take care of the interiors. It was my parents’ dream house, so they wanted everything about the place to be excellent. Since we had figured that none of us were innately good with interior designing and proper placement of furniture, we decided to call our cousin who is an interior decorator on board. She had an eye for things and had a great sense of visualization. She took one look at the place and within a week came up with several excellent blueprints of the interior. After carefully looking at various parameters, we decided on one of the layouts, and then she arranged all the furniture at a really reasonable price. We were very happy with the polishing and the design of the furniture.

Vocabulary:

  • Innately: born with a natural flair or talent
  • Visualization: to form a perfect mental image of something
  • Blueprints: a design plan or a draft yet to be finalized
  1. What kind of furniture would you like to buy?

I had helped my parents in choosing a few of the furniture pieces and while browsing through various physical shops and online furniture sites, I saw this really comfortable reading chair with leg support. But it was too late to add it to our house collection and also that chair wouldn’t go with the theme of the house. But I’ve kept a blueprint of that piece so that I can later buy it when the need arises. I always wanted a reading chair as I spent hours reading novels so it is a piece of furniture I'm always on the lookout for.

Vocabulary:

  • Browsing: to go through or look at various options.

  1. Which furniture do you like best in your home?

There is this one piece of furniture which we bought for this extra room which we had in the basement, which we wanted to use for all purposes. So we required furniture which also could be used for multiple purposes. So, we purchased a table which we placed in the basement room. This table could be used for multiple purposes - from dining to studying, and it can also be used as a gaming table. The size of the table could be adjusted according to our needs and also the height which was perfect for multiple usages. And when not being used, it could be folded to a piece of side furniture, leaving ample space if we needed to sit on the ground and do some work. It is my favorite piece of furniture and I do use it a lot because I find it fascinating, how it can be used so smoothly for so many purposes.

Vocabulary:

  • Fascinating: something which triggers interest.
