Band 8 IELTS Answer

This graph shows the change in normal El Niño conditions over the Pacific Ocean and the forecast for El Niño conditions for 2019. Overall, both conditions show an imbalance between the Western and Eastern Pacific coasts. Normal weather over the Pacific Ocean results in weaker winds, storm clouds, and rain over Australia on the Western coast. These rains also warm the waters on the Western coast, increasing the yield of vegetation. At the same time, however, the Eastern coast has strong trade winds, bringing clear skies over Peru. This then makes the water surface more nutritious, leading to an increase in fish stocks. During El Niño events, strong winds blow in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, while the trade winds weaken in the eastern part. As a result, rain clouds move towards the east coast, bringing heavy rains to the east, i.e. towards Peru. Due to this change, the levels of warm and cold water become equal on both sides. This reduces the nutrients and therefore the nutrition of the fish. However, as sunny weather continues in Australia, drought may occur.

Band 7.5 IELTS Answer

These figures show the change in conditions in the Pacific Ocean during normal and El Niño events. Overall, the waters of the Pacific Ocean were cooler under normal conditions than under El Niño conditions. Under normal conditions, there was a lot of rain, and even more so in Australia.

This rainfall increased nutrients and cooled waters in Peru. Also, winds were weaker in the west and stronger in the east. On the other hand, in Nino conditions, the wind is blowing westwards, but in the opposite direction. Dry temperatures have caused plants to die in Australia and slowed fish growth in Peru. In these conditions, the water is warmer than in normal conditions. The wind effect is also reversed, as in normal conditions the wind is stronger in the west and weaker in the east. The opposite happens during El Niño events.

Band 7 IELTS Answer

The diagram shows how weather patterns are changed by warm waters called El Niño. Overall, it is clear that the El Niño phenomenon represents a serious problem and is causing significant changes in both countries (Australia and Peru). On the one hand, it is clear that strong winds turn storm clouds in bright areas into rain. In addition, weak westerly winds drive warm waters into the Western Pacific and cool waters circulate around the Pacific. This circulation therefore ensures abundant nutrients and allows Peru to continue catching large quantities of high-quality fish. If we look at the photo of the second situation, we can see a striking change in that nearly all of the natural cycles show the opposite situation.

Specifically, as weak trade winds blow from the east, the storm clouds move further east and the weather in Peru turns wet. Nutrient deficiencies can occur as warm water is pushed east by the strong westerly winds.
