Band 8 Answer
The line graph represents car theft, house burglary and street robbery crime rates. The data has been taken for crimes committed in England and Wales between 1970 and 2005. The few striking things that can be noticed are street robbery is lowest. Then comes house burglary and the car theft is the higest throughout.
Once we deep down, we can see that the frequency of car thefts rapidly increased from 0.4 million in 1970 to 0.8 million in 1980. After that there was a steady rise from 0.8 million to 1 million in 1980. After 1990, we can see a sudden spike and rise in the number of car theft. It rose from 1 million to 1.6 million within a span of five years. In 1995, the figures were 1.6 million. After that we can see a fall in the theft count. From 1995 to 2005, the number fell from 1.6 million to 1 million.
House burglary also shows a steady increase in the frequency between the years 1970 and 1980. It was 0.2 million in 1970 and increased to 0.6 million in 1980. The number remained constant for the next five years. After that the number increased to 0.7 million between 1990 and 1995. Then again it remained constant between that period of time. After this, the number of house burglary cases started decreasing and by the year 2005, it decreased to around 0.5 million.
There is a striking thing about street robbery. It remained constant for almost 2 decades. Between 1970 and 1990, we did not see any rise in the number. It remained at zero. After 1990, the growth started and rose steadily to 0.2 million in the year 2000. It again remmained constant to 0.2 million for the next five years till 2005. We can see that there is an upward trend for all three robberies till the year 2000. After that car theft and house burglary dropped but street robbery remained constant.
Band 7 Answer

Between the years 1970 and 1980, the frequency of car thefts was twice as much as the frequency of house burglaries. The frequency of occurrence of house burglary cases also follows a similar trend. It initially increased at a rapid pace from 0.2 million to 0.6 million. During the first decade (1970 – 1980) and remained constant between the years 1975 and 1980. After this, it again increased to 0.7 million in 1990 but managed to remain constant for the next five years. Thereafter, the numbers decreased moderately from 0.7 million to 0.5 million.
The frequency of street robbery was very low – around 0.01 million – for almost two decades (1970 – 1990). Thereafter, the number of cases began increasing at a rapid pace and reached 0.2 million between the years 1990 and 2000.
