Development in Technology has brought various Environmental Problems IELTS Writing Task 2

From burning of fossil fuels to the increasing waste products in the production process, has led to drastic pollution. Greenhouse gases are increasing and as a result contributing to climate change and global warming. Leading simpler lives would mean consumption process need to become more sustainable and ethical. People need to reduce their consumption of goods for instance, fast fashion products, reuse their existing clothing more and purchase from sustainable brands. Essentially, even the industries need to make optimum utilisation of their resources and engage in sustainable activities. People need to become more aware about reducing the use non-biodegradable plastics and use paper or recyclable products. Industries also need to ensure that their raw materials are more organic and finished products are packed in recyclable materials. Moreover, it is important that manufacturing companies focus on zero waste production hence, making it simpler and ethical ways of production. Technological developments on the other hand can be considered to be immensely useful for reducing environmental problems. With the help of renewable sources of energy, it is possible to ensure that production process becomes more sustainable and efficient. Eco-friendly ways of enduring power through biofuels or hydroelectric power can be considered useful. The rising use of solar panels for drawing energy can also be considered as an efficient way of reducing carbon footprint. Hence, with technological developments, production process can be simplified and this would lead to simpler lives as well. Hence, in my opinion technological developments can be considered to be more useful to solve environmental problems. 

While I believe when people start living a simpler life, their choices would become more sustainable, technological developments can be considered to be a more viable solution. While I discuss both the views in the essay, I would justify my opinion eventually. Foremost, it is essential to point out that human activities on a day-to-day basis can be considered to be immensely filled with polluting the environment. This includes using vehicles running on petrol or diesel producing too much of harmful gases and increasing carbon footprint. Further, consumption of fast fashion clothing which is manufactured with huge volume of wastes and the working out of the clothes after one or two trials creates larger environmental wastes. People can instead opt for minimalist lifestyle by choosing to use public transport or using electric vehicles who can afford them. Further, people might reduce purchasing of fast fashion clothes all the time and instead make minimal purchase from sustainable brands which can be utilised to the optimum. On the other hand, the view that technologies can solve environmental issues can be considered to be highly efficient. When industries producing vehicles or manufacturing clothes and other goods would induce efficient sources to acquire power, environmental issues can be reduced. It can be identified that energy efficient technologies have the ability to reduce cost of production along with the use of organic raw materials. This would enable to protect the environment by reducing the emission of carbon dioxide and the reduction in waste materials would imply lesser burning of non-biodegradable wastes. This would eventually lead to reduction in emission of methane and other greenhouse gases thus, reducing the environmental problems and carbon footprint. Hence, I consider technological developments have a major role to play and could be more beneficial in reducing carbon footprints. 

One of the most popular views that people have been trying to argue with is that people need to live their life in a much simpler manner where technological interference is reduced. It is true however, that technological developments with mobile phones have been harmful to the natural environment due to the harmful radiation from the phones unlike the age old telephones. Further, the ozone layer depletion causing harmful ultraviolet rays to penetrate into the atmosphere has one of the reasons with the development of aeroplanes. While benefits of aeroplane has resulted in people travelling widely, it has also caused harmful impact to the ecology. Significantly, on the other hand, many people as me believe that benefits of technological developments are much higher. With scientific advancements, it has been possible for technological innovations to take place. Accordingly, the agricultural sector benefits from making use of eco-friendly ways of protecting and preserving its crops from insects and for longer time respectively. Furthermore, it is technological developments that has enabled energy efficient resources to be induced within the airline industry to reduce their carbon emissions in the atmosphere. With the use of energy efficient technologies, the focus would immediately be on ensuring that optimum utilisation of the resources and sustainable ways of producing products would ensure that carbon footprints are reduced. Hence, technological developments have been able to provide solutions to the environmental problems which only leading a simpler life without technological interference in the 21^st century is not possible.
