Where you were going?

I love to travel around the world, be it a short distance or a long one. I keep up with my schedule by packing the luggage, booking tickets & reaching the station or airport at least 2 hours in advance. But sometimes no matter how well-prepared you are, fate has some other plans. And here I’d like to talk about how once fate got the best of me.

Why the journey was important?

In March 2020, I was traveling to Italy for a 3-week study program in Environmental Science. I was excited about this trip because it was my first visit to a foreign country. I packed well & left on time for the airport. But something inevitable was supposed to happen during my 90 minutes of travel.

What caused the delay?

The lockdown had not begun yet & I was hoping for things to go back to normal. But as it turned out, things got worse. I reached the airport safely & was waiting in the lounge area. I decided to read about Italy & googled the latest news. To my shock, Italy was reporting 20,000 cases daily & due to the outbreak, the government suspended all international flights. And within minutes, I got a text message stating that my flight has been canceled.

And explain how you felt about the delay.

While going back, my mind started wandering. And even though it was an unfavorable situation, I realized that I could have been one of the victims. Coronavirus wasn’t sparing anyone & staying at home was the best chance of fighting it. That’s why even though my journey got indefinitely delayed, I understood the value of life. I was devastated! Looking at your dreams getting shattered hurts more than one can imagine. I picked up my luggage & started walking towards the exit door. I booked a cab & started my journey back home.

Where you were going?

This is about a journey when my best friend was getting married. I was one of the bridesmaids. We have been friends since childhood. This event was significant for me because she was my childhood best friend & we had both waited for this day for so long!

Why the journey was important?

As this was my best friend’s wedding, I had to attend. The journey was important. As it was from Jaipur to Delhi. I had to reach the hotel in Jaipur for the first function and I was traveling from Delhi by road.

What caused the delay?

‘It was an early morning start for me & my 2 other friends. It was a smooth ride until our car gave up in the middle of the road. The engine experienced overheating & we had to pour water to cool it down. This kept happening after every 10 to 12 km & we were still an hour away.’

And explain how you felt about the delay.

‘After a journey of 7 hours, we finally reached the destination but as expected, we got late for the first function. My best friend was not happy with the whole situation but eventually forgave us for the delay. I might have missed out on the first function but I made sure to light up the wedding celebrations!’

Where you were going?

I was applying for my undergraduate degree & was on my way to an entrance exam in East Delhi. I had started early since the travel time was around 2 hours. I had to take an auto, a bus, change 3 metro lines & then take a rickshaw to reach my destination. And that’s why I started 4 hours in advance.

Why the journey was important?

I had just stepped out of my house to board an auto and I saw a huge crowd waiting to board. In a few minutes, 10 autos were boarded & I had no auto to board. I decided to wait for a few minutes hoping that another one would come. But none came.

What caused the delay?

I reached out to a friend who dropped me at the metro station & more than an hour was lost in this hustle-bustle. I boarded the metro & based on my calculation I would have made it just in time. But fate had some other plans. The metro experienced a glitch & halted for 20 minutes.

And explain how you felt about the delay.

I huffed & puffed my way to the examination center. I was 10 minutes late & so were a few other students. After pleading with the authorities, we were allowed to sit. I am happy to share that even though my journey got delayed, I was able to clear the entrance exam & got admitted to a prestigious law school!
