It is known that for the longest time, the Vietnamese people have been based on the agricultural economy till now. Therefore, the people here are most inclined towards counting their days and months based on the lunar year or based on the movement of the moon. Accordingly, the first day of the lunar year is important to all Vietnamese people. Because it is the first year, but also because that day people gather together and celebrate. The USA, during the time of Christmas, appears astonishing with all the shops glittering with stars, gifts, ribbons, and more. Then there are so many Santa Claus dresses bought by people which adds to the great feeling. People opt for symbolic decorations, feastings, and gathering with all their friends and family to celebrate this day. Then there is a cake-cutting ceremony, which results in cramped bakeries. Other important activities include lighting a Christingle, and more. Candy, wreaths, candles, canes, lights, and garlands, are all part of Christmas celebrations.

How this is different from other celebrations?

Many Catholic churches organize religious ceremonies before Christmas. I find two activities - exchanging gifts and family reunions to be the two most auspicious things on that day. Many houses and churches celebrate by displaying nativity scenes of the gentle birth of Jesus Christ. I find this day a very important day in our country.

What day it is?

There are numerous important days and events celebrated in our country Malaysia. Every day has its own charm and different meanings, and it also provides happiness in the minds of people. But there is no day that brings the people together like ‘Heri Merdeka’ which is Malaysian Independence Day.

How you celebrate this day?

Malaysian Independence Day is celebrated on the 31st of August. On that day, a grandly attired and bespectacled man who is famously known as the father of Malaysian Independence. Namely, Mr. Tunku Abdul Rahma, goes up to the podium in Merdeka Stadium and shouts ‘Merdeka’ seven times to hear back from the roaring applause of the crowd gathered there.

How this is different from other celebrations?

Merdeka in Malay refers to ‘independence’. Malaysia gained independence from British rule in 1957. During this day every year, thousands of people gather in the stadium and celebrate the day with emphatic acclaim and excitement. The best part about Malaysian Independence day is, every year since the year of independence in 1957, new themes are enjoyed. Last year we celebrated, ‘Sayangi Malaysiaku: Malaysia Bersih’, which when translated results in ‘Love My Malaysia: A Clean Malaysia’.

This day brings a lot of joy to all the people across Malaysia. People relish the day by hanging flags on their cars, on the balconies of their homes, and in offices. There are banners across the place. On the day, people attend both small and large parades and participate in cities across Malaysia. This day is a very important and memorable day in our country.
