When it was?

In life, we sometimes depend on others for survival. Everything cannot be done independently. So we request others to get something done. Sometimes requests are accepted and sometimes denied. The response is always not positive. But, positive responses motivate us to do good things. They encourage us to live a balanced and satisfactory life. I would like to describe an event where I was denied a genuine request.

What the request was about?

A few years back we got an offer to apply for the Clean and Green Campus Award. It offers an institution an opportunity to take a lead in creating sustainable solutions to the environmental, social, and economic needs of the people in the area. It emphasizes the adoption of eco-friendly practices on campus. As the head of the institution, I applied for the award. I was damn sure that my institution would certainly get that award. We had been engaging in adapting all eco-friendly measures with respect to gardening, construction, and maintenance on the campus.

Whom you requested?

Hopefully, I will go to the Municipal Corporation office and fill in an application form with all the necessary information and essential particulars. The application with all the details which make my institution certainly get the prize. After going through the form, the concerned authorities assured me that we would get an offer letter soon within a week. I waited for more than a month, but to my dismay, I did not get any such letter. After two months, I got a letter informing me that our institution was not eligible as it had not yet been brought under the purview of the corporation area. For the moment, it disturbed me and demotivated me, But, it did not last long. The incident disappointed and discouraged me a lot. Despite the denial, we have yet to continue the same eco-friendly practices. For responsible citizens and authorities, duties and responsibilities are more important than awards and rewards.

When it was?

A few years back my area was affected by flash floods. Almost all families suffered badly. I had to accrue losses due to the loss of business and agricultural crops in the nearby village. After a week of the occurrence of the floods, the Minister for Agriculture visited my area. I submitted a letter urging him to provide monetary help to reestablish my business and restart agricultural activities. The urge was accepted with a smile. I was also very much hopeful. Some of my neighbors got some financial support. But, I had to wait in vain. After waiting for a month, or so I approached the development officer of my zone. I was surprised to see that my name was not included in the list of eligible candidates.

What the request was about?

I argued with the officer for a while but to no avail. The office authorities said that you would get financial help if you get a recommendation from the political leader of the area. I was not interested in approaching any political leader. When the conditions seemed to worsen, I met the chief political leader of the area. He asked me to submit a new application. I did so along with all the necessary documents.

After a week I once again went to that leader. He directed me to meet a certain officer in the office. When I approached him he said that the application form had been rejected. The reason was that the loss accrued by me was not documented well with appropriate evidence. He also hinted to me that my family did not support the existing ruling party in the last elections. That’s how both natural calamities and artificial politics affect our lives. It was a very painful and disappointing experience in my life. Anyhow, later I got a lot of help from my friends and relatives. I could restart my business and farming operations. Luck once again came in my favor. I got stupendous profits the next year. Now I am a totally independent person from those dirty politics and corrupt governance.

When it was?

Since my childhood, I had been dreaming of becoming a doctor. I was very much interested in science subjects, especially biology. My handwriting and drawings were very impressive. I was the pet student of my biology teacher. I was very much interested in field visits and botanical tours. I have been a fan of Mother Thresa. I would like to do service like her. So, I wanted to become a doctor so that I can help a number of poor and diseased people in the future.

What the request was about?

I got a distinction in my tenth class. My highest score was in biology, followed by physical sciences. I was sure to secure a seat in the top college of my town. Only a step ahead to becoming a doctor. I brought an application form from the college. For the sake of formality, I asked my father about my optional subjects in +1 education. My father strongly recommended taking mathematics. He wanted to make me a software engineer. I was very disappointed to know that my father was aspiring to make me an engineer, instead of a doctor.

Whom you requested?

I was in deep thought for a couple of days. I talked with a number of my friends regarding this dilemma. The majority of my friends also suggested I opt for math only. According to them, securing a free seat in MBBS was a very difficult task. If I could not get a seat in MBBS, I would have to go for long-term coaching. There would be a loss of one more year. If I could not get a good rank, then I would have to pay a huge amount of money to secure a payment seat. After knowing the difficulty of becoming a doctor and the recommendations and advice of my father and friends, I had to apply my own mind. I went through different reviews online. There I also got the same result. Ultimately I put mathematics, physics, and chemistry as my optional subjects. Now, I am a software engineer. But, I feel I have not achieved what I dreamt for. If my father had not denied it, I might have become a doctor now. Anyhow, I can do service to mankind by becoming a member of some organization.
