When did it happen?

It happened during a lesson I unintentionally attended because I was unaware of the schedule change. I was waiting for my psychology lecture to start when I saw fresh individuals entering the room after a short while. It was already too late when I realized I was seated in the wrong class.

What was it about?

Already entering the classroom, Professor Quirel smiled warmly as she greeted each student. My interest was piqued by her opening inquiry, so I decided to continue with what fate was predetermined for me. It was an English lecture.

What happened?

I saw the entire class engaging in a debate for the first time, laughing a lot, and clearly enjoying themselves. Even people who would ordinarily disrupt the class were drawn to her because of her ability to capture their attention. She made sure every student gained a new understanding that day. Without them even realizing they were learning material from their assigned syllabus thanks to her extensive topic knowledge and effective teaching methods.

What was the reason for liking it?

One of my favorite topics has always been English. Perhaps because I discover so many new vocabulary and the variety of circumstances in which they can be employed. I always wanted an English teacher who would make the subject even more interesting. The way professor Quirel taught the lesson made me like the subject even more. She was very friendly with the students and she was letting students express their point of views on a particular topic. This really fascinated me because it involves active participation and discussions. My curiosity in the topic was sparked in large part by a class that I stumbled into.

How did it impact?

Due to Professor Quirel unusual teaching style, I became a regular. I tried to get into her lessons whenever I had a little break so that I could learn not just the English language but also how to teach it to others. As a result, during my second year of college, I switched from Psychology to English as my major, and I now hold a degree in English.

When did it happen?

I never like English because of the rules of grammar. They were more like the theorems of mathematics and it confused me very much. I never took an English class except one time. I registered to the webinar by mistake. I stumbled upon an advertisement and clicked on it due to which I was registered. Since, I had already registered, I thought of taking the lesson. This happened almost a year ago. 

What was it about?

It was an online webinar based on the use of English grammar hosted by Mr James Dsouza who is a prominent writer and journalist. The webinar was very interactive and everyone talked about themselves but in English. 

What happened?

To my surprise, the session, however, turned out to be interesting. The guest speaker not only interacted with every participant but also made us play various games based on grammar and its application. I thoroughly enjoyed it and realized that it is not the subject that is monotonous, it is actually how it is being taught to the learners that makes it interesting or uninteresting. It was a moment of enlightenment for me. He had a profound knowledge of the subject and the insights that he was sharing was very much related to real-life scenarios. I learned why certain rules of grammar are followed in one situation and a different one is applied in other. They no more looked like rules without any rationality. I understood that even a language like English follows logic and over the period I started attending more such webinars.

What was the reason for liking it?

That webinar left a lasting impression on my mind and transformed the way I viewed the English language. I made a conscious effort to learn the language. I learned it not just by listening to video lectures available on youtube but I started watching English movies. I also started exploring several games that would enhance my language skills. This came from that first webinar which made me fall in love with English. It was due to the fact that I could learn English via games and the subject was not monotonous.

Learning the English language has always been a cumbersome task for a person like me whose native language is not English. Modern times require a sound knowledge of this global language and I always felt that I lacked that skill until I attended an English lesson presided by Mr Alex Maugham who is a pioneer in the world of linguistics.

One of the striking things that I noticed in his session was the engagement with the audience. Although the audience was participating from different parts of the globe yet they were able to understand him and he was able to convey his thoughts lucidly to them. This made me reflect on the idea that language is just a medium of communication, not communication. While it holds the power to transform the intended meaning of the speaker, non-verbal cues also play an equally significant role in conveying the thoughts. Mr Alex used gestures, body language, facial expressions besides just the language to interact with the audience. I was extremely impressed to learn that aspect of communication. He also emphasized the use of basic vocabulary and how with practice one can step up to using advanced words. He stressed using words in context, not memorising them. His approach to the language was very different for me and after applying all his ideas, I now hold a good command of the language.

Speaking in the English language earlier used to be a conscious effort for me. After attending Mr Alex’s session, it has now become a very natural effortless process. The seminar was extremely insightful and packed with knowledge especially for people like me who had inhibitions in making use of this foreign language. Thanks to him that now I do not hesitate to pen down or speak my thoughts in a language that is not my first language.
