Who was he/she?

Giving is more satisfying for the soul than taking. The most basic way of giving is to help another individual who is in need or in a crisis. We, humans, are social animals who depend on one another to survive. That’s where help comes into the purview. Helping is the most natural thing of being human, I feel. It comes to us instinctively, at least for me. I’ve grown up in an environment where we always used to help each other and those in need. One such occasion which is clearly etched in my mind is when I was able to help one of my cousins.

How did you know him/her?

My cousin was born with a rare liver disorder and the doctor had alerted the family well beforehand that he had to go through a liver transplant once he hits puberty. But for a liver transplant to be successful, the donor liver should be at least a 90% match. Unfortunately, such a match wasn’t easy to find as he had a rare blood group. But then one day, when I visited him and we were discussing the specifications required for the match,I discovered to my surprise that I can actually be the donor.

How did you help?

I came back home and soon took a doctor’s appointment to check the donor’s compatibility and thankfully it was a match. I did some research on the entire transplant process and how it would affect my physical health as my parents were skeptical about the process as I had an entire life ahead of me. After researching and showing them the details of my full recovery within months as the liver can regenerate to its normal size with time, they gave their consent. Within weeks the transplant took place and within a month, both I and my cousin recovered rapidly. I had never felt this good before by helping someone but this experience was so unique that I will always remember it.

Who was he/she?

Helping is our second nature and it’s one of the core fundamental values that is taught to us since childhood. We are constantly helping one another in the daily course of life. But sometimes helping someone in need makes you feel very happy. One such instance was when I was able to help our watchman’s family get vaccinated.

How did you know him/her?

The watchman of our house has been working for us since over a decade and has always been a wonderful human being to us. He was very loyal and always cared for me and my brother like his own children. During the pandemic as well, he made sure that everyone is safe and has the necessary safety kits. He used to sanitize the palace regularly and made sure that everyone was wearing masks while entering and leaving the building. During the pandemic, he was the strongest pillar of support.

How did you help?

When the vaccination drive had started and my parents got vaccinated. I took all the details from them regarding the process and decided to help our watchman’s family get vaccinated as they are the ones taking maximum risks to protect us. I discussed with him the entire process and told him that I will make sure that his entire family is vaccinated. On hearing this, he started thanking me for taking care of his family. I took all the necessary documents from him and got his family registered and made their appointments at a convenient date and time. I drove them to the location of the vaccination drive and filled out the forms for them and got them vaccinated. Once they were all safely vaccinated, I got them the basic medicines which they may require for some mild fever or body ache. I was glad that I could help the person who was constantly putting his life in the line for his job.

Who was he/she?

In school, we are always taught to help one another and it is cultivated in us through various activities like group projects, helping the poor by donating our clothes, and other ways. But as we grow up, we often forget the essence of helping. We get so busy with our lives that we forget to look around us. I realized this recently and wanted to change this sort of attitude. And I knew I could do that by first doing it myself. I decided to look around and help those who genuinely need help and make a difference. I used to often see a 7-year-old girl coming to our house with her mom to help her with the daily chores.

How did you know him/her?

She has been helping my mother with the housework ever since I was a child. But recently, I noticed she started bringing her daughter to help. One day, I asked her why she was bringing her daughter every day to our place instead of sending her to school. She told me that it was pointless in her community to educate a girl child as she will grow up and join her mother. So, it was wise that she started helping her at a young age so that she can learn. I was both surprised and sad upon hearing this explanation. I talked to my parents about this and told them how I wanted to help her with her education.

How did you help?

My parents supported me and we talked to the mother as well as the daughter about this proposition and convinced them that she can get educated and live her dreams. On hearing this, her mother was elated and mentioned that she would be the first girl child in her family to receive an education. We enrolled her in a government school and got her all the necessary study materials. She was a meritorious student and whenever she faced any difficulty in her studies, I helped her overcome it. With time, we became very close and had a unique student-mentor relationship. I cherish this relationship I share and I’m glad that I could help her live her dreams.
