Model Answer 1

Where were you?
Foreign languages are difficult to learn because we are not familiar with the culture and the people of a foreign country. There is a demand for foreighn language speakers in all sectors. I talked in a foreign language for the first time when I was in college.

Who were you with?
I met a girl who was from France. She came to study at my university and she got admitted late for the course. She came and sat next to me. I was planning to study in France for my post-graduation and was taking coaching to learn the French language. So, I was familiar with a few words.

What did you talk about?
She talked to me in french and said 'Bonjour' and since I knew the meaning of the word, I greeted her with "Bonjour". She was surprised to hear me speaking French and asked if I knew how to speak french. I was learning the language but I was nowhere near fluent so, I told her that I was not perfect but I understood a few words. Later, we went to the cafeteria and ordered some Indian food. She loved it and said 'Merci', which means thank you in french and I replied 'de rien' which means you're welcome.

And explain how you felt about it?
She was happy and spoke some other terms in French which I clearly understood. I felt so happy and accomplished at that moment that I can't explain it in words. The French language is so elegant and beautiful. I felt so good when I first talked in french, it was like a whole different experience and the good thing was, that girl was not judgemental at all. She listened to me very carefully and even highlighted the part where I needed to work. My first experience of talking in a foreign language was really good and at that time, I wasn't perfect but now, I can speak french fluently.

Model Answer 2

Where were you?
I always wanted to learn foreign language. The first time I spoke in foreign language was when my uncle visited us last summer. He lives in Spain and speaks Spanish. He visited us after 7 years and I wanted to surprise him by learning Spanish. I learned Spanish from a coaching center nearby and though I was not perfect, I started to understand the language and the basic words.

Who were you with?
My uncle came in April and we were all so excited to meet him. He entered the house and I greeted him with 'Hola' which means hello in Spanish. Uncle was surprised and asked how I learned the language. I spoke a few more lines in Spanish and everyone including my family members was perplexed. I didn't tell them about my coaching as I wanted to surprise them too.
Uncle spoke to me in Spanish after that and I felt so happy and proud. Learning a foreign language is very difficult but I was so happy that I learned Spanish in a short time.

What did you talk about?
We chatted for an hour about Spanish culture and my uncle told me about the various places to visit in Spain. It was a wonderful conversation and the reason was that I was able to understand what he was saying in Spanish. I even translated a few words for my father to understand. My uncle lived in Spanish for a long period of time, so he doesn't understand Hindi and prefers to speak in Spanish. We had a very good conversation and he invited me to visit Spain during my summer vacation.

And explain how you felt about it?
My first experience of talking in a foreign language was very good. I was hesitant at first but then I gathered some courage and went for it. Speaking a foreign language can be difficult as you constantly think about what people will say if you say something wrong. But, in my case, there's no such problem as I was talking to my uncle and he wasn't judgemental at all. In fact, he encouraged me to speak and even gave feedback on the areas I had to work upon.

Model Answer 3

Where were you?
My friend, Rohit and I used to study together in our college. We were best friends. Then, after college, he went to France for further studies. I met him after 5 years last week and to surprise him, I learned French a bit. I purchased an online course that teaches foreign languages and learned the basic words and sentences in the French language.

Who were you with?
I met Rohit at the airport and greeted him with 'Bonjour' and his reaction was priceless. I spoke a few other words in French and to them, he replied in French too.

What did you talk about?
We had a full conversation at the airport in french and I can't explain how proud I felt at that moment. That was the first time I talked to someone in a foreign language and I am glad that I did, it was fun. Growing up, I never thought about learning a foreign language but because of Rohit, I learned French, and since then. I've learned many foreign languages.
We went to an amazing cafe after leaving the airport. He knew Hindi and English but he was talking to me in French because he was so surprised about the fact that I knew French. I never showed any interest in learning a foreign language when we were in college so, his surprise was justified. At the cafe, we ordered Indian food as he missed the food very much and wanted to taste it in its authentic sense. Then, we spoke about our professional lives and how he faced difficulty in adjusting to another culture, and how he tackled it. He talked in French and I understood every word of it.

And explain how you felt about it?
My experience of speaking in a foreign language for the first time was amazing because I got to do this with my best friend. He didn't judge me or ridiculed me for saying some words wrong. He was a patient learner and because of this, I felt confident while talking to him in French. I was hesitant at first but then, I got comfortable and according to him, spoke like a true french.
