Model Answer 1

Who this person is?

In my town, an old lady has recently started a business of traditional textile weaving. She is a very knowledgeable old woman and comes from a family of weavers. She is more than 70 years old but her perseverance is admirable, she is always smiling and always hopeful that her craft will survive another day.

What work this person does?

We are all very happy to see her and her business thriving. It is not easy at her age to come up with a business idea and commit to it. She is assisted by her daughter and two sons in this business.

Her business involves making clothes using fabric that was traditionally weaved on the handloom. She also decorates these clothes in traditional prints and patterns. She said that about 3 decades ago, the art of weaving fabric using Tana-Bana was very popular and folk tales were embroidered in fabrics. People took pride in owning these specially crafted clothes. In order to make her business relatable she sews modern clothing in these fabrics.

Why this person decided to start a business?

She decided to open this business because this craft has been in her family for more than 4 generations. Just like every other traditional craft today hers also suffers from insufficient labour compensation and is on the verge of dying due to lack of patronage. With this business, she hopes to revive her hope as well as the hope of those weavers who haven’t abandoned handicraft in favour of power looms.

Explain whether you would like to do the same kind of work as this person?

If given the opportunity, I would like to do the same. My business doesn’t involve textiles because I do not have much expertise, but I want to protect dying artforms. There are several musical instruments in India like Yazh, Dilruba & Pena that are on the verge of extinction. My goal would be to connect players of these instruments to those who want to learn it thus propagating the craft. Through my business, I would like for people to know about the stories of these instruments. For example, Banam, a musical instrument from the Santhal tribe, represents monogamy.

Model Answer 2

Who this person is?

My maternal uncle recently started a business. He had a swanky job, but he is also fond of cooking and interior décor. Obviously, people discouraged him from quitting at his age because he has a family of 3 to look after. But his wife was surprisingly supportive of his efforts. He set shop using his savings, it’s a small establishment as of now but quite popular. Everyone in our family hopes that he will be able to make something big out of it.

What work this person does?

His business is that of a restaurant providing affordable meals for university going kids. Of course, regular people can visit the restaurant, but students get a special discount. His restaurant cooks nutritious dishes that form part of home-cooking in various parts of the country. For example, the restaurant serves comfort food like Rildok, Kapa, Gunpowder Idli etc. the restaurant also offers such packaging which can be eaten on the go or outside without utensils.

Why this person decided to start a business?

He started this business because he believes simple dishes that originate from humble homes are very powerful. He is an ardent food lover himself. Because he lives near a University attended by students coming from every corner, he hopes to remind them of their home without burning a hole in their pockets.

Explain whether you would like to do the same kind of work as this person?

If given an opportunity I would like to do the same kind of business. I would open a restaurant that would serve dishes from every period of India. Because the food we eat now didn’t exist at all, say some 300 years ago. I want to serve the dishes from an India which didn’t have potatoes, chillies, and tomatoes yet we made wonderful dishes.

Model Answer 3

Who this person is?

My father’s friend who owned a stone grinding factory before has now opened another business. He is a very cheerful person and extremely good at what he does. My father was a bit shocked to see him opening another business from scratch rather than investing in one. But everyone trusts his expertise and keen eye. He said that this new business wasn’t inherited from his father so it gave him a sense of achievement that he could make something on his own.

What work this person does?

His new business is related to stonework. Maybe he feels comfortable with stones. In this business, he isn’t grinding stones rather cutting and shaping them. There is a stone called Shazer which is exclusively found in Ken River, he deals with that. These stones are very ornate and are used for pilgrimage purposes. His business extracts these stones from the riverbed, cuts & polishes them before supplying them into the open market for sale.

Why this person decided to start a business?

He started his business because his hometown is on the banks of Ken River, and he saw an opportunity in these stones when he came to know about its usage. These stones had a high demand due to their use in the Hajj pilgrimage. He decided to capitalise on that idea and the business has been doing well. It also adds to the exports of our country.

Explain whether you would like to do the same kind of work as this person?

I would not like to do the same kind of business because it involves the extraction of a natural resource which will always be surrounded in controversy. It’s a great idea but I don’t think I could handle the ethical dilemmas that come with this business. I would rather a government entity extracted these resources and local jewellers made them into saleable items.
