What the rule is?

One policy I don’t particularly like and would like to change someday is the policy prohibiting the use of mobile phones in school.

Where or when it applies?

This policy is common in most schools, including mine. In this policy, students are not permitted to bring their phones to school. If a student is caught with a phone, the school confiscates the phone.

Why you dislike it?

I dislike this policy because, in my opinion, phones are helpful tools in the classroom. For example, with a smartphone, students are able to research, study, and read books. In the modern world, technology is a major part of our lives, and it plays a large role in the classroom. I think a ban on phones is not the solution.

And explain what you would change and why?

If I could change this policy, I would allow students to bring their phones to school, but only to use them for educational purposes. For example, a teacher could allow a student to use his or her phone during a certain lesson to research or study. However, the student would not be able to use the phone in other instances, and the phone would remain in the student's bag or remain off.

Overall, I think this policy would help students learn how to properly use a phone in the classroom, and it would also help them learn how to properly use a phone in the future, since it is a part of our lives.

What the rule is?

There’s one rule at school that really gets under my skin: students can only go to the library during a set library period. Basically, you can’t just pop in whenever you want, even if you’re itching to read or just need a quiet spot to study.

Where or when it applies?

A lot of schools do this. You get one library class a week to borrow or read books, and outside of that, the doors are pretty much closed to students. So if you want to dive into research for a project, find a new book, or just escape the noise for a bit, you’re out of luck. This rule blocks you from the library when you actually need it.

Why you dislike it?

I can’t stand this rule because the library is easily one of the best parts of school. It’s the one place where you can dig into new ideas, build a real reading habit, and learn things that go way beyond what’s in the textbooks. Sometimes you just get curious or want some peace and quiet to focus, but then this rule shuts you out. Because of that, a lot of students miss out on discovering new books or interests.

And explain what you would change and why?

If it were up to me, I’d let students visit the library during their free time or after they finish classwork. Sure, there should still be rules—keep it quiet, treat the books well, that sort of thing.

Giving students more freedom to use the library would push them to read more and learn on their own. I honestly think if libraries were open and easy to access, way more students would fall in love with reading and really start to enjoy learning.

What the rule is?

One change I wish to see is related to the very early start times for schools.

Where or when it applies?

In many parts of the world, schools have very early start times, such as 7:00 or 7:30 am. This means that students have to wake up very early in the morning simply to get ready and arrive at their classes on time.

Why you dislike it?

I am not very fond of this, and I think it should be changed. Waking up so early in the morning every day is exhausting, especially for people who have to travel long distances to get to their destinations. Many students do not get enough sleep, which makes it difficult for them to focus and concentrate on what is going on in their classes. This is because, when people do not get enough sleep, it is difficult for them to concentrate.

And explain what you would change and why?

If I had my way, I would want to see the time changed so that classes do not start until 9:00 am. This would be very helpful, as students would have enough time to rest and wake up refreshed and ready to go. In my view, education should be all about health, both physically and mentally.
