Describe a Risk You Have Taken Which Had a Positive Result Cue Card

It took place almost three years ago. I pulled the chain in an effort to help a kid while also stopping a train that was already moving. We were travelling to Mumbai to take part in a family function. We were taking the train. We were taking pleasure in the refreshments that my mother had packed for the train ride while the weather was calm.

Why did you take it?

It was about 4 hours after the journey started, we heard some noise. It was coming from the side of the train gate. I asked people what happened and one person told me that a child's arm got stuck in the train gate. Despite a number of people being present, nobody was ready to help the child. The child was in unbearable pain. I wanted to help but it did not seem like a one-man’s job. All of a sudden my cousin said that he wants to help the child. Without losing any more time we went toward the train door.

At first, we tried to pull the chain so that the train would stop but unfortunately, it was not working. So now, it became extremely risky to help the child on the running train. But we did not give up and tried our best. My cousin held me from the back very tightly when I was helping the child. I move the child’s hand carefully because the child might get injuries If I hurried.

What the result was?

It took almost half an hour to release the child’s arm and fortunately, there were no severe injuries.

How did you feel about it?

It was great to see the child in relief. Her mother thanked us. Although my own mother was furious at us for taking that risk later she realized that the child might lose her arm if we did not act promptly. So I think we always need to take risks if someone’s life is in danger. I am happy that we were successful to get the child out of the danger without any great damage.

Why did you take it?

My mother was very sick and was going under extensive treatments. About three weeks before the exam her health deteriorated even more and I was the only person in the home to take care of her. I had to skip the classes and I did not find enough time to go through my books. As my final exams were very near, I was very worried about what I would do.

What the result was?

One of my teachers came to my rescue. Since I could not cover the entire syllabus, my teacher advised me not to give up hope and asked me to go through the important chapters first. But I was still anxious as it was a big risk to take. If the questions would not come from that part of the syllabus, then I would be almost back in the exam and would definitely fail. Failing in an exam would mean a loss of a year.

It was a very difficult time for me. I decided to follow my teacher’s advice and I took the risk by covering the important chapters from the syllabus. I covered almost half the syllabus of every subject and I left the rest to God.

How did you feel about it?

Then after about fifteen days, it was the time of the exam and I appeared in them. I was very lucky and God seemed to help me at that time. Almost 85% of the questions were from the syllabus that I had covered. I performed well and even scored good marks.

So the risk that I had taken paid me well. I think it is better to take risks than to give up at once. I have no doubt in the saying that no risks mean no returns. We have to take risks if we wish to gain meaningful things in life.

Why did you take it?

It was the Diwali holiday. I planned to go on a trip with three of my colleagues to an area far away from our hometown. That area was a rainforest with thriving wildlife. Luckily we also got a good hotel offer for the season. We were absolutely thrilled about it. Everything went as per our plan on the first day of the trip and we visited some of the most luxurious wildlife in the country. We went in my car and I was the driver for the entire trip. On the first day, our visits came to an end around 6.00 pm and suddenly there was a huge storm. We had to wait in a cafe for almost two hours. Around 8.00 pm we started for the hotel we booked for ourselves. We found it will only be a twenty-minutes drive if we take the shortest way shown on Google map. At first, there were plenty of houses and people on the road. However, as we drove more and more we felt that we were somewhere where there were more trees and no people. The road was also narrower than at the beginning and it was dark.

What the result was?

After about five minutes of driving, we found something blocking our narrow road and within seconds we realized it was a wild elephant. We were in shock. I switched off the lights and the car. We waited for almost thirty minutes in silence for the elephant to move. Fortunately, it moved and we had no option but to continue slowly expecting attacks.

How did you feel about it?

I drove the car by my gut feeling as all of us were extremely scared. Once we reached the hotel we told the manager what happened and he said that we have come through one of the biggest forests in that state which had a lot of elephants, leopards and even bears. So the risk I took gave me a great lesson about how we should conduct ourselves in the time we are facing unknown fears. I will remember it for the rest of my life.
