Describe a person from a Different Cultural Background with whom you Enjoy Spending time Cue Card

Topic: Describe a person from a Different Cultural Background with whom you Enjoy Spending time Cue Card

You should say:

  • Who this person is?
  • What their cultural background is?
  • What activities you do together?
  • And explain how this experience impacted you?

Answer 1:

Who this person is?

My colleague Aiko comes from a totally different background than mine, and honestly, I love hanging out with her. We first met while working together on an international project. She’d just arrived in India from Japan for a short assignment, and we clicked pretty quickly.

What their cultural background is?

Aiko grew up in Japan, which is known for its discipline and work ethic. She loves to share little anecdotes about Japanese culture—the bowing that serves as a greeting, the size of the cherry blossom festival, the importance of punctuality. I am completely addicted to her stories, fascinated by how different her culture is from mine, particularly in terms of communication.

What activities you do together?

After work, we often meet up. Sometimes we grab dinner together—she’s introduced me to real Japanese food like sushi and ramen, and I’ve had fun introducing her to Indian dishes in return. We talk a lot about what’s different between our cultures, watch movies, or even check out local cultural events together.

And explain how this experience impacted you?

But spending time with Aiko has changed me in ways that I never thought possible. I have learned a few things from her culture, such as being organized and arriving on time, and now I find myself doing these things without even thinking about it. But the biggest change is in the way that I see the world. Aiko has taught me to appreciate our differences rather than focusing on what’s missing. Because of Aiko, I have become more open-minded.

Answer 2:

Who this person is?

One of the most interesting classmates I have is Daniel, a postgrad student that I met early on in the program. We hit it off right away, and we’ve been enjoying trading ideas and stories ever since.

What their cultural background is?

Daniel is from Nigeria, a West African country that is famous for its lively music, colorful festivals, and diverse ethnic groups. He regularly shares interesting stories about Nigerian traditions, family, and the country’s rich musical heritage. The thing that has impressed me the most is the way that community is woven throughout life in Nigeria.

What activities you do together?

Most of the time, we sit together in the library studying and working on group projects. When we take a break, we like to share stories about our cultural traditions and even cook meals for each other. He once cooked a traditional Nigerian meal for me, and I cooked up some homemade Indian food for him. We also like to share music from our countries.

And explain how this experience impacted you?

This friendship has opened my eyes to a whole new world. I must say that despite all these differences, some of the things that I and my friend value most, such as family, respect, and friendship, are actually quite similar. This friendship has helped me improve my communication skills and be confident about communicating with different kinds of people from different backgrounds. It has also encouraged me to explore different cultures from all around the world.

Answer 3:

Who this person is?

My neighbor and true friend, Marie, is a woman from a culture that is wonderful and very different from mine, and I really enjoy her company. She moved from France to India a few years ago on work visa, and we started talking in the elevator as a matter of courtesy. Gradually, these short talks extended into longer talks, and before I knew it, I had made a true friend.

What their cultural background is?

Marie talks about her memories of living in France, sharing stories of her childhood, French festivals, and café culture, which add so much color to life in France. She talks of people who indulge in deep conversations over cups of coffee, people who truly appreciate a work-life balance. She is a very calm and composed person, which is very different from me, but when I am stressed, talking to her really makes me slow down and take deep breaths.

What activities you do together?

On weekends, we take long strolls while the sun goes down, and sometimes we even linger on the patio, sharing stories about books, adventures, and the unique characteristics of our respective cultures. She once prepared a French dessert for me, and I, on my part, showed her some simple Indian dishes such as pulao and chai.

And explain how this experience impacted you?

Having spent time with Marie really rubbed off on me, especially in a positive sense. I learned to take things slow and enjoy each moment, rather than living life on fast forward. Most especially, I realized that expanding one’s horizons, or appreciating other cultures, can actually bring people closer, even if they do not belong to the same culture.
