Describe a Leisure Activity That You Do With Your Family Cue Card is the topic for IELTS Speaking. There are three model answers given below. There are four important points that are answered including- what activity it is, when you do it, with whom you do it and do you enjoy doing it.

What activity is it?

We are a small nuclear family of four people. Like most nuclear families, our’s consists of my sister, father, mother, and myself. Since all of us are working individuals, except my mother, we do not get much time together. My mother is a housewife. Thus, our mom is all alone throughout the day. Hence, we have decided that we will spend our Sundays together. Since this is a leisure day, we will all cook together and have dinner together. Also, we have decided that we will watch one movie with the whole family.

When do you do it?

As said we have mutually decided that the best time to enjoy time together is on Sundays. So, the last time we did it was last Sunday. Every day my mother cooks for everyone. So we give her a break on Sundays. We cook for my mother and it is a pleasure to see the smile on her face. Doing a leisure activity always does not mean reading a book or such activities. Spending time with your loved ones is also a leisure activity in today’s times. We decided to make a non-veg meal as my mom loved chicken curry and then watch a comedy film.

With whom do you do it?

The four of us, my mom, dad, sister, and I were on the team. We planned our day so that we could spend most of our time together. You can say it is a kind of ritual and love for each other. From Monday to Saturday we reach home at night, have dinner, relax for some time and then go to bed. We hardly have time for each other to know what’s going on.

Do you enjoy doing it?

We loved each other's company and this is why we waited for Sunday to come. The craze of spending time together on Sundays is such that during the weekdays we keep discussing which dish to make this Sunday and which movie to play. So, everyone gives their ideas, and together what’s most liked by mom is finalized. Sometimes we also go shopping in the evening even when I hate it, but together as a family, we enjoy it.

What activity is it?

I like to play computer games in my leisure time. Now I am in my 3rd year of college but still I have the urge for computer games. Earlier in my school days, I was the best gamer in the class and even won several online competitions. It was a routine that every day after coming from school I played computer games. The best computer game I liked was anything involving shooting such as Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, etc. But now in college, I cannot afford to play computer games daily, so it is a leisure activity now.

When do you do it?

The last time I played a computer game was last Friday. I remember the day so clearly because last Friday was the day when my exams ended. So, it was the perfect way to celebrate the end of my exams. I prepared for this day even before the exams as I installed the latest game on my computer. So, my exams were over at 2 pm, so I rushed home and sat at the computer table. I played for almost 4 hours till 6 pm completing several missions.

With whom do you do it?

I usually play computer games alone but as it was the end of my exams one of my friends decided to play the game together online. He and I teamed up against zombies and smashed them to dust. He was a novice so I had to teach him about controls and playing style. And thanks to my teaching skills he also became a pro gamer on that day only. My friend was not sure how we would be able to win the game. I just told him to follow what I say.

Do you enjoy doing it?

I definitely enjoyed it as it brought back memories of school time when playing computer games was an everyday thing. It has been almost 3 years since I installed any game on my computer. But I was glad to see that even after such a long break from playing I didn’t lose my flair for playing. I was still shooting enemies with perfection and winning the rounds. The enjoyment was such that I cannot express it in words, it was a surreal experience.

What activity is it?

Reading books is my best leisure activity. My favorite genre is crime and mystery and I have read almost every reputable author of that genre. Reading books was earlier not my favorite leisure but slowly as I grew and entered, I realized the importance of becoming a book reader. It enhances my knowledge, literature, and vocabulary skills. And now I am such an avid reader that I keep finding opportunities to read books. I was attracted to the crime and mystery genre because of its unpredictability. It always keeps you on your toes.

When do you do it?

Last month a new book by my favorite author was released. I placed the order on an online shopping platform the same day to get it as soon as possible. Within a week I received the order. No one knew that I had placed the order for a book when the delivery boy arrived my mom was shocked. I had ordered the book with my pocket money; hence, the order was prepaid. That’s why my mom was surprised as to where I got the money from. The book consisted of 350 pages and I completed it in 2 days only.

With whom do you do it?

Book reading is something which I prefer doing alone. It is not a game that without one’s company you may get bored. Book reading involves not just simply mugging the lines written but understanding the subtext that the author is trying to portray. For people like me, book reading is not just another leisure activity, it is an experience that must be felt. Too many people during book reading make me uncomfortable and my mood of reading disappears.

This is why while reading a book I place myself in a corner of the room, away from family members.

Do you enjoy doing it?

Definitely, if the book is of my choice then I will surely enjoy it. And if the genre is crime and mystery then I would read it even if the author is unknown. This book was by my favorite author, Paula Hawkins. She is if not the best then surely one of the best in crime and mystery genres. The news that she is writing a new book came out 2 year ago. Since then I had been awaiting her book and finally, when I finished it, it satisfied all my expectations.
