  • Where it is?

  • What you learned there?
  • And how you felt about this historical building

Answer 1:

Where it is?

One of the historical sites that left a lasting impact on my memory is the Taj Mahal located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. This is a popular tourist site.

What it looks like?

It is built using white marble and beautifully lines the Yamuna River. It has a huge central dome, surrounded by four smaller domes and four tall minarets at its four corners. It is designed with beautiful carvings and floral motifs, set with precious articles, making it glisten. Its perfect symmetry combined with its reflection in the long water channel in front of it is a beautiful treat for the eyes, especially when the sun is setting.

What you learned there?

While I was at the site, I learned that Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in memory of his beloved spouse, Mumtaz Mahal. The structure took over two decades to build, and it took thousands of artisans and workmen. I also learned a thing or two about Mughal architecture, a combination of Persian, Islamic, and Indian influences.

And how you felt about this historical building

Stood there, and I must say, I was amazed. There is a huge difference between what you see in photographs and what you see in reality. It was a feeling of pride and heritage of our country. The monument symbolizes love and exceptional craftsmanship. The Taj Mahal has given me an experience to cherish.

Answer 2:

Where it is?

Another historic landmark that I greatly admire is the Red Fort, situated in the heart of Delhi. It is not just any monument; rather, it is a symbol of history and independence.

What it looks like?

Being within the Red Fort, I felt as though there was no way that one could escape the feeling that there are no beginning or ending points within the expansive red sandstone that engulfs the space. Being within the Red Fort, and as one enters through the magnificent doors, one cannot help but feel drawn to the Mughal style that can be seen throughout. The Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas seemed to speak of meetings and deliberations that had gone on within these spaces. The gardens and museums simply add to the beauty and life that is felt throughout the space.

What you learned there?

The Red Fort was commissioned by Shah Jahan when he shifted the capital from Agra to Delhi in the 1600s and has remained as the living quarters of all Mughal emperors since then. It is interesting to note here that on Independence Day, the national flag is hoisted by the Prime Minister of India itself, giving it a strong association with India itself.

And how you felt about this historical building

Walking its lengthy corridors, lined with a hall of echoes, feels like stepping into another era, imagining the opulence of royal courts from days of yore. Visiting the Red Fort, I have a tremendous sense of pride for our heritage.

Answer 3:

Where it is?

A building that really caught my eye in Kolkata is the Victoria Memorial. This is one of Kolkata’s principal landmarks, and to me, it is a moving reminder of Kolkata’s colonial past.

What it looks like?

I was fortunate enough to visit the monument with my family during my trip to Kolkata. From the point I saw the monument, I could not but admire the sheer size and grace of the monument. The white marble, the dome on it, and the sheer air of majesty are all outstanding. The green around the monument makes the place look serene. The monument is a unique blend of British and Mughal styles.

What you learned there?

Inside, one could find old paintings, statues, photographs, and documents. As one roams the galleries, one discovers that the memorial was constructed in honor of Queen Victoria after she passed away and was completed in the early 20th century. At the same time, one could gain some insight into how the Brits ruled India and developed infrastructure in the nation.

And how you felt about this historical building

During the entire visit, I felt a combination of curiosity and introspection. The Memorial is undoubtedly beautiful, but it is also a reminder of an important phase in the history of our county. For instance, it makes you think about the extent of change the country has undergone. Ultimately, the visit to the Victoria Memorial was not only a matter of sightseeing but also a way of learning history.
