In the times when people were locked up in their houses for two years, it is difficult to think of a place which is jammed packed. However, the pre-Covid times were when people gathered together during the times of celebration. One of the biggest festivals celebrated in India is Durga Puja.

Durga Puja in India is the time when families unite. Relatives across the globe come together to celebrate the victory of good over evil. One of the important markers of this festival is hanging out with friends and family near Puja Pandals and feasting on street food delicacies.

To fuel the enjoyment, food fests are organized across the state where people make merry while enjoying mouth watering delicacies. I remember spending one Puja evening in one such food fest in Bangalore. I arrived at the fest with my family and found a sea of people enjoying the food fest decked up in their best attire. We were prepared to push through the crowd to reach the food stalls. It was one of the most crowded places in the city that night. Like the thousands of people around us, we visited the place to celebrate the spirit of Puja with food and drinks.

The place smelled delicious. You could hear laughter all around. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and instilled a feeling of happiness amongst all. Though it was difficult to reach the food stations as we had to push through the swarm of people, the sense of achievement at the first bite of the dish bought, made all the efforts worth it. We were in no rush, it was an easy evening, the ground full of people were there to greet each other, celebrate with each other. For one night, we didn’t remember where we came from and what we did. For one night, we were all family.

The first year of an MBA degree is when you need to explore your campus as well as yourself. Our campus was situated on a hilltop in Bhopal, and was surrounded by lakes and grasslands.

We were in our first year and were excited to be a part of this great institution. To welcome us, the senior batch had organized a fresher’s party in a nightclub not far from the campus. I was excited that night and had dressed up for the occasion with the help of my roommate.

To be honest, it was the first time I was stepping inside a nightclub. I could not believe the amount of people that were crammed inside that small space. After we reached, we found out that one other party was being held in the club on the same night. It felt, like the whole of Bhopal was present in the club that night. Sweaty bodies bumped into each other on the dance floor. The bartender was swarmed with orders coming from across the bar. To be a part of this, I rammed through the crowd along with few of my friends onto the dance floor while the rest of them struggled to be visible to the bartender among the sea of people to get our drinks.

Soon we realized that coming to the party that night was a mistake. The place was overpopulated and made it very difficult to breathe for us. The crowd around was were drunk and were not in control of their gestures and movement. Utter chaos broke out on the dance floor as soon as a bunch of drunken guys joined the dancing populace and started to push everyone out to make space for themselves.

Not able to withstand any further, we squeezed through people and found our way out of the club. After that night, we swore to never enter a nightclub without checking for the amount of people present.

Buying vegetables from the local farmer’s market or the weekly market is an activity that many Indians still indulge in. In the era where you can get every item of need with a click of a button, buying vegetables from local shops is therapeutic and keeps the social being alive.

However, weekly markets are also the place where one can get squashed and even robbed amongst the swarming sea of people. I remember visiting one such weekly vegetable market in Kolkata every Sunday to stalk up on vegetables and meat for the week. On one such Sunday, I also happened to lose my phone. It was a sunny morning when I left for the market. The day was bright; the streets of the market were bustling with people.

I had kept my phone in my pant pocket and was walking around the market picking up the freshest of the produce found. As I reached into my pocket to pull out my purse, I realized that my phone was missing. I looked around, but it was nowhere to be found. Eventually, I realized that the thief took advantage of the crowd around me near the shop and had lifted the phone out of my pocket. As the crowd around me was thick and were pushing against me, I didn’t realize the action.

I realized that it was essential to be extremely careful with your belongings when entering into a crowded space.
