What crop is it?

India is a versatile country. All types of crops grow here. I belong to the northern [part of India where wheat is grown in abundance. I have been familiar with this crop since my childhood. Punjab is the one of the largest wheat-producing and consuming states. I am familiar with this crop since I do not live far away from the lands where wheat is produced. The lands in these regions are highly fertile. The weather condition and the land structure accelerates the growth of wheat in this region. I often visit these fields as my uncle owns many of them.

When and where it is grown?

The sowing of the crops takes place in the month of November. After the crop is grown to its full capacity, they are harvested in the month of April. A very famous festival of Vaisakhi is associated with this crop as farmers begin the harvesting with this celebration. Wheat is a crop which is a staple food for many states across India. It provides huge support to the economy of the country. Most people in the country consume wheat products. India produces millions of tons of wheat every year.

What do you think about it?

Many of them are exported to other countries which helps the economy of the country. As it is produced in such large quantities, managing wheat is also necessary. Nearly 30% of wheat is wasted due to a lack of management. If the wheat management can be improved, India will get more economy from foreign countries. Wheat will remain one of the basic crops that is required in every household. Hence, 100% usage of the produced wheat can bring a lot of changes.

What crop is it?

I reside in West Bengal which is the largest producer of rice. This is considered as one of the most used crops in the state and all over India. Rice is one of the most used staple foods that serves the country. Not only India, countries all over the world use rice and various forms of it. West Bengal produces around 20% of the rice backed by Uttar Pradesh which stands at 15%. Since, I stay in a village in West Bengal, I am very familiar with rice. India is the second largest exporter of rice in the world.

When and where it is grown?

The annual production of rice is around 120 million tons per year. Rice being a tropical plant, it flourishes comfortably in a hot and humid climate. Rice is mainly grown in rain-fed areas that receive heavy annual rainfall. In some states like West Bengal, two crops of rice are raised in a year. In some regions of eastern India, during the summer and monsoon seasons, both high temperature and heavy rainfall provide ideal conditions for the cultivation of rice. Almost all parts of India are suitable for raising rice during summer, provided water is available.

What do you think about it?

Thus, rice is also raised even in those parts of western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana where low-level areas are waterlogged during the summer monsoon rainy season. Since rice is the staple food, India consumes a lot of rice and also exports heavy amounts. This brings a lot of economy to the country. I think rice production has employed many people around the country. Many farmers can run their family due to the production of rice. This makes rice a very important crop of the country.

What crop is it?

India is one of the largest producers of tea in the world. A number of world famous teas like Assam tea and Darjeeling tea are also produced in India. This makes India the highest producer of tea in the world.

When and where it is grown?

The major tea-producing states in India are: West Bengal, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Sikkim, Nagaland, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya. I am a resident of the hilly areas of West bengal. I come from darjeeling which is famous for tea production. I have grown around tea estates. My father owned a tea estate in Darjeeling. Though India produces the largest amount of tea, more than 60% is consumed within the country. Tea is grown on the slopes of the mountains. Tea gardens are set up on the cleared hill slopes where shade trees are planted in advance.

What do you think about it?

Seeds are sown in the germination beds and the saplings transplanted to the garden. The garden is regularly hosed and weeded so that the tea bush grows without any hindrance. Tea bush is a tropical and subtropical plant. It grows well in hot and humid climates. The ideal temperature for its growth is 20°-30°C. Tea plantation requires 150-300 cm annual rainfall. The rainfall should be well distributed throughout the year. Tea bushes grow well in well drained areas. Hence, they are planted on slopes of the mountains. I think tea plantations contribute hugely to India’s own economy. Not only that, the plantations attract tourists from all over the world. This increases the country’s tourism industry by a huge margin. I believe that this is one of the largest industries which includes crops. Building the tea industry in a proper way can help grow the country's economy.
