What was the course about?

To be a better and an efficient person in all genres of life, we need to gain knowledge. I believe that a person can learn all his life and acquire knowledge and experience. Accordingly, I had the urge to learn new things for which I took up several courses. I had a fascination for cooking and hence, one of the courses that I took up was cooking. I wanted to learn and develop culinary skills from cooking to garnishing to the presentation of food. This was not just a cooking course. The course taught every single aspect of cooking which made me interested in taking admission. It started from the way one should hold utensils and glasses to the plating of a dish.

Where did you take the course?

I recently came across a special cooking course which would last for three months. My friends referred me to this crash course which was held at the Institute of Culinary Development. I gained the details of the course and the phone number from them and joined the course. The classes were held just in the middle of the town in one of the town halls where different people participated to learn cooking.

What did you do during the course?

During the course which was a matter of three months, there were a number of exciting things to learn about. First of all, I learned about cooking North Indian and South Indian food, Chinese and even Italian. Many new dishes are what I learnt from the course. Further, we were also given training in the presentation of the different dishes. The professional chefs taking the class made us learn how important it is to present the food we made to make them look delicious.

And explain why it impressed you a lot?

One of the primary reasons that cooking interested me a lot is because my mother loves to cook. I have always seen her cooking different delicacies. She was the one who inspired me to take up cooking as a professional course. Further, the cooking course that I took included professionals from the food and hospitality industry providing their wisdom and ideas about making different food. It motivated me to learn from some of the best chefs in the country. I was impressed that the courses meant for three months made you learn quite a number of delicacies as well as the etiquette of being a chef.

What was the course about?

Since my childhood, I have always been interested in the art of photography which I feel has remained close to my heart. I remember owning my first toy camera which clicked pictures and gave out polaroid photos. When I grew older enough, my parents realised my interest in photography and always encouraged me to click pictures. They bought me the first DSLR camera that I used to click lifestyle and natural habitat pictures. Eventually, I took up a vocational course in professional photography and I learnt from some of the best professionals.

Where did you take the course?

Living in the city of Kolkata, there is immense diversity in cultures and through the course, I was able to find my identity as well. I took the course from one of the best vocational training schools in the city. It included professional photographers, who taught us the theoretical as well as practical implications of photography.

What did you do during the course?

First of all, I learnt about the basic theories of photography that the professionals taught us. Further, we applied them to our practical work as well. During the course of a year, we went on different projects that helped me in learning the art of photography in the most professional manner. I learnt to take up pictures from the grassroots level of people, learnt about aesthetics, adjusting brightness and contrast, etc. Moreover, I also learnt about how to make edits to your photographs using lightroom and other editing tools which are essential to bringing essence to the photos.

And explain why it impressed you a lot?

The fact that I had the opportunity to learn from industry professionals as well as go on photo walks with them impressed me the most. It made me learn as well as enjoy my time. The institute also provided us with internship opportunities with different brands that need photographers. It impressed me because it helped me shape my career which has made me happy.

What was the course about?

I always wondered how my grandmother knew so well about knitting and stitching. When I was young I remember she made me woollen clothes as well as cotton dresses herself. While I hardly found my mother doing the same because of her work obligations, I was interested in stitching and knitting. So I took up a vocational course of two months which made me learn the art and skill.

Where did you take the course?

A group of women in our neighbourhood opened their own business of stitching and knitting two years ago and have become quite famous. They also provide coaching to the people interested in this kind of work and are quite efficient. I talked to them about learning the same and they took me in to teach me.

What did you do during the course?

During the course, I learnt how to do handmade stitching. I learnt different types of stitches from simple running stitches to complex backstitch type of sewing. I also learnt to stitch with the use of a sewing machine both traditional and modern electrical. I was also able to learn how to knit woollen clothes. From socks to sweaters, I learnt how to knit them. I also learnt how to crochet clothes which made me enjoy the course thoroughly.

And explain why it impressed you a lot?

I was impressed by the fact that stitching and knitting had so many varieties. Moreover, the women who taught me have always been encouraging towards me, helping me learn every stitching method with enough patience. I was impressed by the affordable rate of the course. I was quite impressed when they asked me to work with them as one of the stitching workers. While I did the same just as a hobby, I made it a part-time job helping me earn some pocket money as well.
