Crowded Places - IELTS Speaking Sample Answer

IELTS Speaking Part 1 gives a general topic on which you are expected to speak eloquently and cover the IELTS topic from various angles. This sample article contains relationship questions from Part 1 of the IELTS speaking exam. The target of this task is engaging in general conversation with the test-taker that includes IELTS speaking topics like home, education, work, family, academics, and more.

Topic: Describe a crowded place you have visited

Question: Is there a completely quiet place?

Answer: I think that there are not many quiet places in the cities but if one goes to the countryside especially the mountain regions one can find a lot of places with no noise. In my opinion the only quiet place in the cities would be a library, where everyone sits quietly and goes about their work or studies.

Vocabulary:

  • Countryside (noun) - The land and scenery of a rural area
  • Goes about (phrase) - begin or carry on with an activity

Tips: The speaker here tells about quiet places that he might find in the countryside also he is quite descriptive and describes a few places in the cities like a library.

Question: Do you like to go to the places where there are many people?

Answer: Well it depends a lot on my mood when I feel like socializing, I like to visit crowded places like restaurants and malls. At these places when I see a lot of people who are smiling and enjoying their time, I get a lot of positive vibes.

Vocabulary:

  • Mood (noun) - A temporary state of mind or feeling
  • Socializing (noun) - the action or practice of participating in social activities or mixing socially with others
  • Vibes (noun) - a person's emotional state or the atmosphere of a place as communicated to and felt by others.

Tips: The speaker is transitioned to start talking about his personal experience and choices in the first half, he/she also describes the surrounding spaces and people around the area.

Question: Do you like the places with large space?

Answer: Yes, I like to visit places where there is a lot of space, one can comfortably roam around at such places whereas places which tight make me feel claustrophobic. At large places, one’s personal space is not intruded.

Vocabulary:

  • Comfortably (adverb) - in a physically relaxed way that is free from constraint
  • Roam (Verb) - move about or travel aimlessly or unsystematically, especially over a wide area.
  • Claustrophobic (adjective) – (of a person) having an extreme or irrational fear of confined places/ (noun) - a person with an extreme or irrational fear of confined spaces.
  • Intruded (adjective) - fearless; adventurous

Tips: Here the speaker needs to give a one–to–one answer as yes or no and then further specify the reason for their response; in the question above the speaker specifically denotes and clarifies why he loves visiting places with plenty of space and the logic behind the same- Claustrophobia.

Question: What are the places which attract many people in your country?

Answer: The two places which attract the most people in our country are religious shrines and shopping malls. People in my country just love being at these places and you will always find these places crowded.

Vocabulary:

  • Shrines (noun) - a place regarded as holy because of its associations with a divinity or a sacred person or relic, marked by a building or other construction.
  • attract (verb) - cause to come to a place or participate in a venture by offering something of interest or advantage
  • Crowded (adjective) - full of people, leaving little or no room for movement; packed.

Tips:

  • In the first part the speaker describes about the main attraction of the country;
  • And continues to elaborate the reason why the people come to these places and the scenario of the place.

Question: What do you think is the most important thing about a public event?

Answer: I think, nowadays, the most important thing of a public event is the security of the people because in huge crowds things can easily go wrong and lead to mishaps. Another arrangement that organizers should take care of would be public conveniences like drinking water, urinals etcetera. Organizers should also have plans for emergency situations like fire.

Vocabulary:

  • Go wrong (phrase) - malfunction; develop a fault.
  • mishaps (noun) - an unlucky accident
  • Conveniences (noun) - the state of being able to proceed with something without difficulty
  • urinals (noun) - a building or enclosure with facilities for urinating

Tips: The speaker is quite relevant and practical about his answer and his response includes practical ideas as to what are the important and must have conveniences at public events and also continues to elaborate about what are the responsibilities of a manager and the noteworthy points a manager should keep in mind.

Question: What are the types of problems that can be better solved by group work?

Answer: I think all problems can be solved better by group work. When different minds work together on solving a problem, it leads to generation of multiple ideas, which help in solving the problem much faster and in a creative manner.

Vocabulary:

  • Generation (noun) - here the production or creation of something
  • Multiple (adjective) - having or involving several parts, elements, or members.
  • Creative (adjective) - relating to or involving the use of the imagination or original ideas to create something.

Tips: The speaker elaborates first what group work can result in and is quite relevant with his answer that all the problems could be solved through teamwork; the answer is short, convenient and to the point, it does not need any further elaboration.

Question: What kind of places do people want to go to when they want to be alone?

Answer: When people like to be alone they normally go to their homes and spend time in the comfort of their bedrooms. Sometimes people like to go on a long drive or even travel to a different city. Being alone gives them an opportunity to reflect upon their problems and think about their future or desires.

Vocabulary:

  • Comfort (noun) - a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint
  • Opportunity (noun) - a time or set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.
  • Reflect (verb) -here think deeply or carefully about.
  • Desires (noun) - a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen.

Tips: Here the speaker specifies the answer by keeping himself in the situation as to where he/she would prefer to go if in such a circumstance and then continues to elaborate his choices and the reasons for the choice and causes of the same.

Question: Why is it sometimes important for people to be alone?

Answer: In today’s world people often get stressed by too many events happening around them. So, in order to relax their minds people prefer solitude. It is important for them because being alone gives them the time to think about the things that really matter to them and they can focus better in their lives.

Vocabulary:

  • Stressed (adjective) - experiencing mental or emotional strain or tension.
  • Events (plural noun) - a thing that happens or takes place, especially one of importance.
  • Relax (verb) - make or become less tense or anxious.
  • Solitude (noun) - the state or situation of being alone
  • Really matter (verb/ phrase) - be important or significant.
  • Focus (noun) - the center of interest or activity.

Tips: The speaker here generalizes his/her opinion, at the start there is description about the causes of stress and further he/ she explains the solution to the same and is quite descriptive about the positivity of the answer.
