You will hear three students talking about the last tutorial
First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 23.
Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 23.

Dave: Hi Sarah, that was actually quite exciting wasn't it?

Sarah: You really think so Dave? I'm completely worn out. If I have to take in another piece of information, my head's going to explode.

Dave: it was good though.

Sarah: I have to admit it was.

Dave: And it was challenging.

Sarah: Challenging? The last tutorial? It makes me think I learned absolutely nothing at school. I understood nearly all of it, but a few bits. I'm not sure I got it all. Reading is reading and that's that.

Dave: Well it is and it isn't, you know.

Sarah: We all read in the same way.

Dave: No, we don't.

Terry: What are you two arguing about?

Sarah: Oh, it's Terry. Hi.

Dave: Reading.

Terry: Reading?

Dave: Yes, reading.

Terry: That's not exactly a sexy subject to be talking about, is it Dave?

Dave: I don't know. I find it quite exciting really.

Sarah: You would.

Dave: We've just been to this tutorial on study skills as part of the English literature course and Sarah's found it difficult to follow.

Sarah: No Dave, that's not true. It's just there were some things that I'm not so sure about or more importantly sure whether they're important or not.

Terry: Well, what was the problem?

Sarah: Well, when I read, I just read. And Dr. Pratt was going on about all these different techniques that we need to develop and hone.

Before you hear the rest of the conversation you have some time to look at questions 24 to 27.
Now listen carefully and answer questions 24 to 27.

Terry: How do you read them Sarah?

Sarah: I just read as I said like everyone else. I read each word as it comes.

Terry: How many pages do you read in an hour?

Sarah: About 25 to 30.

Terry: And what about you Dave?

Dave: 60 maybe 70.

Sarah: 60 to 70?

Dave: That's not a lot. How many do you read then Terry?

Terry: It depends about 120.

Sarah: What? Oh come on Terry!

Terry: Yeah, I am not unusual. One of my friends doing Medieval History, Arnold, he reads about 160 an hour.

Dave: But does he remember it all?

Terry: Yeah, I think so Dave.

Sarah: I get through only one book a week.

Dave: Yeah, me too. What about you Terry?

Terry: At the moment, three.

Sarah: And your friend Arnold?

Terry: 20.

Sarah: 20?

Before you hear the rest of the conversation you have some time to look at questions 28 to 30.
Now listen carefully and answer questions 28 to 30.

Terry: In fact, what matters is that you develop your reading speed to suit the circumstances. You could still stick to your eaten speed of 25 Pages an hour for leisure purposes, but double reading speed for reading journals and academic text. If I'm scanning a text for a specific information. I can just whizz through then when I find what I want. I'll read through the particular part very slowly. With 40 to 50 or more books to get through in a term. You can't afford to read everywhere.

Dave: Have you always read like that?

Terry: No, it's only since I've been here.

Sarah: I find this all very depressing. How did you do it then?

Terry: In the first week your time in the first year, we had a tutorial on reading from Dr. Pratt. Yeah, and I felt so inadequate after the class.

Sarah: Well, what did he tell you?

Terry: He just gave us a few basic strategies on reading and then over the last two years has been nurturing. So that we all now work very efficiently.

Sarah: So he's your tutor too? You can tell us then what he means when he talks about learning to read the content words only.

Terry: Well, this is obviously just the first that if you read every a, the, to, from was etcetera, it really slows you down.

Sarah: Yeah.

Terry: But if you train your eye to look at the nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives.

Sarah: Assuming you know, what they are.

Terry: Well, then the big words then you automatically increase your speed.

Dave: Yeah, that makes sense.

Sarah: Right. I think I'm going off to the library to start. Thanks for the tutorial.

Terry: Anytime. I'm off to the sports center.

Dave: By the way. What was your reading speed per hour when you first came here?

Terry: 25.
