Band 8 IELTS Essay

The table provides the data of percentage of consumer products owned UK households. The data is provided for a span of 26 years starting from 1972 to 1998. The products are Colur TV, Home Computer, Washing Machine, Telephone, central heating and cars.

The percentage of household who had colour TV was 93% which increased to 96% in 1972. However, there was a drastic drop whic reduced the use of TV to 74% in 1981. The usage of Colour TV slowly began to rise starting in 1985 and was used by almost 100% household in 1998. The Home computer was not in use before 1985. It started from 13% and increased gradually to 34% in 1998.

All the other household appliances like Washing Machine, Telephone and Central heating shows gradual increase of usage. There is no dip in any year and the graph continuosuly goes upwards. However, when we see the data for Car or Van, we can see that for the first 3 timeframe, it had increased from 52 to 69%. However, in 1985, it decreased to 62% and then steadily increased to 72% in 1998. Hence, it is evident that the usage of consumer durables never decreased after it was introduced. People started using more with the advancement of time.

Band 7 IELTS Essay

The table provides details on how the number of British households amenities has changed over a 26-year period between 1972 and 1998.

In 1972, the vast majority of households (93%) had a color television. In the next three years, figures touched the mark of 96%. However, the numbers dropped to their lowest of about three quarters (74%) in the early 1980s. The percentage rose steadily since then and almost all households (98%) had this mode of entertainment in 1998. The greatest increase was observed for central heating. The number of houses equipped with this facility rose from 37% in 1972 to 90% in 1998. Next came telephone ownership, rising from 42% households in 1972 to 96% in 1998. The percentage of households having a washing machine went up by 26% houses and families using car or

van rose by 20%. In 1985, the introduction year of home computers, only 13% households had it. However, by the end of 1998, numbers had climbed to 34%. Overall, the percentage of British houses endowed with long-lasting goods and facilities increased throughout the given period.

This table reveals a picture of how British households transformed their lives with consumer durables over 26 years, from 1972 to 1998.

Color Televisions definitely stole the show among all. In 1972, almost every household had colur television (93%), but the numbers dipped in the early 80s before hitting a near-perfect 98% by 1998. While owning a car or van grew by 20%, central heating growed rapidly with 37% of homes in 1972 to 90% by 1998. Telephones also followed similar graph, climbing from 42% to 96% ownership. Washing machine ownership surged 26%. Home computers, newcomers in 1985, steadily found their way in, rising from 13% to 34% by the end of the period. The Home computer was not in use before 1985. It started from 13% and increased gradually to 34% in 1998.

Overall, British homes embraced progress, becoming equipped with goods and amenities that made life easier and more enjoyable.
