Comparison with Different Degrees Working in Engineering Company in 1980 and 2008 IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample Answer is given below. Topic: Two pie charts show a comparison of the proportion of people with different degrees (first degree, master) and professions (Arts, science) who worked in an engineering company in 1980 and 2008.

Model Answer 1

The given cartograms represent the percentage of graduates holding different degrees. First degree, Masters and PhD – in Science and Arts in a particular engineering company during the years 1980 and 2008, respectively.

In 1980, about 25 percent of the graduates held a First Degree in Arts whereas only 19 percent of the employees held a First Degree in Science. Again, in the same year, it can be observed that almost 12 percent of the employees in the engineering company held a Masters in Arts. On the other hand, only 29 percent of the people managed to graduate with a Masters in Science. Similarly, a mere 13 percent of the people graduated with a PhD in Science. In contrast, the number of employees graduating with a PhD in Arts was about 2 percent.

However, this trend changed completely in 2008. During this year, it is observed that almost 11 percent of the employees had a First Degree in Arts. Whereas only 10 percent of the graduates held a First Degree in Science. The percentage of people who have graduated with a Masters in Arts and Science were 13 percent and 29 percent, respectively. Furthermore, about 30 percent of the graduates had a PhD in Science. In contrast, only 7 percent of the employees held a PhD in Arts.

In conclusion, it can be said that over a period of twenty eight years, the percentage of people interested in higher studies have increased drastically. Thus, a greater number of people are now graduating with a Masters or PhD in Science and Arts. Science is considered mainstream. Students are so influenced by different sub streams of science. They want to excel in science lso because it offers a greater salary. Arts have a broader outlook. Students get a variety of courses to do. They can choose whichever they desire.

The above pie diagrams illustrate the percentage of employees of an engineering company that hold diverse degrees. Undergraduate Degree, Master Degree and PhD Degree - in the field of Science and Arts in 1980 and 2008, respectively.

During 1980, the percentage of employees holding a First Degree in Science and Arts was almost 44 percent. Out of this, about 25 percent of the people have graduated with a First Degree in Arts. Whereas the remaining 19 percent of the employees hold a First Degree in Science. In contrast, the percentage of people holding a Masters Degree in Science and Arts are comparatively less – only 41 percent. About 12 percent of the employees hold a Masters in Arts whereas the employees holding a Masters in Science is almost 29 percent. The percentage of people holding a PhD degree in Science and Arts is even less – 15 percent. About 13 percent and 2 percent of the employees have graduated with a PhD in Science and Arts, respectively.

These numbers witnessed a drastic change in 2008. During this year, the percentage of people holding a First Degree in Science and Arts dropped to 21 percent. Out of this, 11 percent of the employees had a First Degree in Arts. Whereas only 10 percent of the people graduated with a First Degree in Science. However, the percentage of people holding Masters and PhD Degrees in Science and Arts increased to 42 percent and 37 percent, respectively. The number of employees holding a Masters Degree in Science and Arts are 29 percent and 13 percent, respectively. On the other hand, the employees who have graduated with a PhD Degree in Science and Arts are 30 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

In conclusion, it can be said that the percentage of people opting for higher studies in Science and Arts have increased in 2008 as compared to 1980. Thus, a smaller number of people are interested in graduating with a First Degree in Science and Arts.

Two pie diagrams have been drawn to show the percentage of graduates. Acquiring different degrees in the field of both Science and Arts for two years – in 1980 and 2008, respectively. In this case, the employees holding degrees in Under Graduate, Post Graduate and PhD have been considered.

Thus, it can be clearly observed that the percentage of employees holding First Degree in Science and Arts have decreased by about 23 percent in 2008. The total percentage of employees holding First Degree in Science and Arts were 44 percent in 1980 which reduced to only 21 percent in 2008.In contrast, the percentage of people holding a Masters Degree in Science and Arts increased by 1 percent in 2008. The total percentage of employees holding a Masters Degree in Science and Arts was 41 percent in 1980 which increased to about 42 percent in 2008.In a similar manner, the percentage of employees holding a PhD Degree also increased by almost 22 percent in 2008. The total percentage of people holding a PhD Degree in Science and Arts was 15 percent in 1980 which increased to around 37 percent in 2008. It can be seen that PhD in science has increased its influence in 2008. Students are very influenced by the stream of science. There emerged a lot of new sub streams in the field of science. The increased number of students in science is also due to high salaries in such fields. Students are more interested in the fields which offer them a high salary. Also, students not only study science in India but also go abroad to study.

Thus, in conclusion it can be said that the demand for obtaining Masters and PhD Degrees is more in 2008 as compared to 1980. On the other hand, the percentage of people obtaining a First Degree reduced drastically over the period of 28 years – from 1980 to 2008.
