Common Idioms For Appearance & Personality - IELTS Speaking

IELTS Speaking contains three parts that contain different types of questions. The common idioms for work help candidates learn a wide range of idioms, phrases, and vocabulary that are helpful in IELTS speaking. The examiners notice the range of vocabulary used by the candidates, and learning from the idioms will help them score high in IELTS speaking.

  1. Youthful Appearance

Meaning:- having an appearance ,and a youthful enthusiasm like the young people( having freshness in them and they behave as if they are younger than their original old age.)

Example:- My grandmother's age is 80 years but she maintains a youthful appearance by regular exercise and eating healthy meals.

  1. Look young for your age

Meaning:- It means that one looks younger than their actual age and it is a positive idiom describing that one has not many signs of aging.

Example:- My mother's age is 50 years, but her skin glows like a bulb , as it means that she looks very young for her age.

  1. To be getting on a bit

Meaning:- It means a more old aged person and this idiom is used to describe the person who is getting old.

Example:- Mr. Ramesh is getting on a bit as now he is not able to walk properly and all his hairs have turned white .

  1. To bear a striking resemblance to somebody

Meaning:- This idiom means that someone is quite similar ( in the way of appearance ) with someone.

Example:- Me and my sister bear a striking resemblance asany people thought that we are twins.

  1. To be good looking

Meaning:- to look beautiful,handsome,attractive,pretty

Example:- Hritik roshan is 47 years old and he is still a good looking man.

  1. To be well built

Meaning:- to be physically strong , having a great body and large muscles , a powerful person.

Example:- Manish is a well built person , of large height with dark complexion and has a beard on his.

  1. To be well - turned out

Meaning:- looking smart, dressed very nicely ( usually wears expensive clothes) , wearing a proper neat and clean dress.

Example:- Mr. Kohli always well- turned out well , so I'm sure he will get an award for the best dressing sense.

  1. To be overweight

Meaning:- fatty person , too heavy ,having more body fat than an average person

Example:- Ram is too overweight , he has to do some exercise and morning walk to reduce his weight to avoid many health issues.

  1. Shoulder length hair

Meaning:- The haircut that should match with the shoulder length of the person.

Example:- Sita has gone to the salon to get her shoulder length hair , type of hair cut.

  1. To lose one's figure

Meaning:- having a figure which has lost its toned shape.

Example:- Mohan does not perform any physical exercises and eats a lot of junk food , so he has lost his figure.

  1. To get done up

Meaning:- to dress up in a neat , smart and proper style which makes the person's personality attractive.

Example:- Jack always gets done up before his formal meetings , and due to his proper style of dressing , he always maintains his goodwill in front of other company members.

  1. To be the life and soul of the party

Meaning:- a person who is full of energy and a funny nature and has the talent to gain the audience's attention towards him is known to be the centre of the party.

Example:- Mihir has the ability to tell funny jokes and is known as an attention seeker who can get everybody's attention towards him , therefore he is known as the life and soul of the party.

  1. To hide one's light under a bushel

Meaning:- hiding and not telling about their ideas, skills , talents and various achievements that one has acquired.

Example:- He scored a first rank in the whole university and still hides his light under a bushel as he doesn't want people other than their family members to know his achievement.

  1. To lose one's temper

Meaning:- a kind of short tempered person , the one loses their self control and suddenly become angry and violent upon something,

Example:- Aman always loses his temper at the silly thing, therefore people have started avoiding him , as he is a short tempered person.

  1. Good sense of humour

Meaning:- a person having a good temper and the ability to understand what is funny and what is not, and have the ability to see the funny side of a situation instead of always being serious and having a cheerful and agreeable mood.

Example:- Developing a good sense of humour is very important to impress others.

  1. Trustworthy

Meaning:- A person on whom one can easily trust and share their secrets with them and having a trust that the person will not reveal it to others and you can have confidence that your information will be safe and that person will always be loyal with you.

Example:- My best friend is the most trustworthy person in the college, with whom I have shared all my secrets.

  1. Self Confidence

Meaning:- Someone who is confident and believes in his own skills and abilities to perform any kind of thing , having self respect.

Example:- Ramesh is having a lot of self confidence in himself , that he can speak about any topic in front of a large number of groups.

  1. Self - assured

Meaning:- having confidence in themselves about their own abilities to achieve any goal and it is similar to self confident

Example:- The winner of the show was Randeep kapoor, a self assured music director, who was considered by many candidates that he won't be able to survive in the show for a longer time.

  1. Introverted

Meaning:- A person who is shy and quiet and is only interested in their own thoughts, a reserved person .

Example:- I found my brother so introverted , as he only likes his own company.

  1. Extroverted

Meaning:- someone who enjoys the company of other people and can easily talk with outsiders, a socially active person.

Example:- My sister is very extroverted and she can easily talk with strangers and can maintain friendly relations with them.

  1. Easy - going

Meaning:- a person who is calm and can deal with things in a cool, peaceful and relaxed manner.

Example:- Sita is an easy going person who completes all the difficulties of her life in a peaceful manner.

  1. To bend over backwards

Meaning:- making an extreme effort to help others in every possible way and working hard to accomplish something for another person.

Example:- Joy has always bent over backwards to help me out during my difficult times.
