What is a Collocation?

Collocations are the habitual grouping of two words with different meanings. For instance, take the example of bright light or strong tea. These words comprise diverse meanings, which, when used together, create a unified meaning. For example, take the example of bright light and strong tea. Imagine that I replace the word strong with another word, such as weak or feeble. Now the two combinations of weak tea and feeble tea sound both unnatural and absurd. This absurdity is because strong tea is a widely used and accepted collocation while the other two are not.

The word "Ban" means to prohibit something/ disallow something. The Cambridge English dictionary defines the term as to "forbid" or "refuse to allow". It can also refer to the expulsion of a person from somewhere. Ban can also be used to denote outlawry. However, like many other words in English, this single word takes on diverse meanings when they function like the different members of the language family. Although the root meaning remains the same, their usage varies with regards to whether they are employed as an adjective or verb or used with other words.
