Introduction to Collins Cobuild Phrasal Verbs Workbook

Phrasal verbs are one of the complex areas of the English language. This edition of Collins Cobuild provides students with comprehensive information on phrasal verbs in an easy-to-understand language. With Collins Cobuild dictionary it is easier than ever for students to find all the information they need.

Collins Cobuild phrasal verbs workbook has over three thousand phrasal verbs and explains 5,500 different meanings. Collins Cobuild is packed with information on how phrasal verbs work, what they mean and how to use them.

How To Use The Workbook

Nearly half of the phrasal verbs in Collins Cobuild are formed with 18 common verbs. There are ten units of material, each follows a comparable format. The first nine units each provide detailed information on one of the most important particles. The last unit comprises the additional seven particles. There is not any particular order to study these units. Every unit has an introductory page addressing the important implications of the particle being studied, with lists of phrasal verbs to be practiced in each section of the unit. It could be possible that a phrasal verb appears twice in the same section, with two meanings. Generally, a phrasal verb appears in two or three different sections. This is not unusual, as most phrasal verbs have more than one meaning, and at times can have as many as 20 different meanings.

The final segment of each unit is called Other Meanings. This comprises phrasal verbs which regularly fit into a category of meaning, yet the classification is too small or too restricted in its meaning to be added in this Collins Cobuild phrasal verbs workbook. You can find them in the Particles Index of the Dictionary. The other phrasal verbs covered in other Meanings are those which are too common and which do not clearly fit into any particular category of meaning. Towards the end of every unit, there is a separate segment of revision exercises. This section tests whatever you have studied in the unit. Collins Cobuild phrasal verbs workbook proves to be really helpful in the IELTS preparation.

The Sections

Every section of a unit includes one category of meaning. If more than ten phrasal verbs are to be studied, the section is divided into two pans. A section begins with example sentences, giving common use of the phrasal verbs. The examples are usually followed by Language Comments, which highlight other phrasal verbs with comparable or opposing meanings, and which also give more formal equivalent verbs when they exist. A common misconception is that phrasal verbs are frequently used in spoken language. They can be found in several IELTS writing styles, of highly formal government reports.

The Exercises

If a category of meaning involves phrasal verbs which are especially hard to understand, the main exercise requires you to complete the definitions of a few or all of the phrasal verbs from the Collins Cobuild Dictionary. Subsequent exercises involve coordinating phrases or sentences. It means that you have to pick a phrasal verb that best fits a gapped sentence, from the given three alternatives. In the last exercise, you should give special attention to the form of the verb. Throughout the book, you will also find exercises called Bad Jokes, where you are required to coordinate the two halves of the jokes.

Most of the sections have a last memorization exercise, which has an elephant logo close to it. Memory is supported by links, connections, and images. We recognize unique things considerably more easily than ‘ordinary’ things. In this exercise, you have to write one paragraph comprising at least one example of each of the phrasal verbs in the section you have recently studied. The phrasal verbs don't certainly need to be in a similar order. You should use the least words or pictures. Have a clear mental image of your story; you should see it as a little film in your mind. Practicing these exercises can help you boost your overall IELTS score.
